It's become such a goddamn business. Remember when Salon.com had a games section? I LOVED James Wagner Au's articles, which had this awesome intellectual and cultural edge. That's the kind of journalism I prefer, the total opposite of Gamespot.

Hmm? Now that you've asked, I'm not sure, I haven't checked in at AVault recently. HOWEVER, during the first couple of months in 2005, the site stopped having any updates at all. I was curious, so I visited the forums and saw the explaining thread from the staff. Apparently, too many staff members had simultaneously resigned of contributing for some reason, and hence the temporary lack of updates.

Eventually, new content did start to appear, but still less regular and more hardware-oriented than it used to be. But as I said, I it was a good few weeks since I've been there, so this may all be a story of the past.

EDIT: On the other hand, given Trep's reply (that appeared after I started writing this), it probably isn't.

Of the major gaming news sites, I enjoy GameSpot the most. I also visit eToychest regularly. It's a smaller-scale site, but does an admirable job of covering the entire industry. Also, their reviews and commentary tend to align pretty closely with my gaming interests, rather than whatever happens to be Joe Theft Auto's flavor of the month. And finally, I spend a lot of time lurking on the Penny Arcade forums. There's a lot of garbage to filter out, but if you can tolerate the crap, it becomes a pretty good gaming news portal, with some interesting and occasionally insightful commentary.

Idle T and GameSpot is my two favorites, but I also occasionally visit IGN, Gamespy and Avault.

For serious and well-written articles, reviews and news: IdleThumbs and Eurogamer. (Plus GamesTM and Edge among paper alternatives)

For simply knowing how games are received by the biggest sites: the biggest sites. GameSpot, IGN, GameSpy. Wouldn't trust them, though.
