Default Video game sales up to $7.3B in the US

According to this article video game sales in the US continues to grow and now total $7.3B, with $5.2B is console and $1.1B computer and $1.0B for portables. Well worth to note here is that computer games sold for $1.2B the year before.

Interesting for us may also be this:

Adventure games is bigger than sports games on computers. I wonder what definition they have for adventure games here.

Does this take into account online stores like EBAY or only retail stores?

Also, the 5.2 B in consoles, does that include actual hardware or only software? I mean I'm sure they don't add NVIDIA and ATI graphics cards or the Alienware sales into the 1.1 B for PC.

I've no idea. The figures comes from ESA, so you might want to contact them if you really want to know.

It says "video game sales" so there's no indication they would be including hardware.

I read the article and you are 100 % right. They say Video Game Software Sales so I guess they are only talking about the games themselves.

There are some really interesting figures in there.

"Interestingly, despite the disproportionate media attention paid to a few controversial titles, the NPD Group's data indicates that only 16% of games sold last year were rated "Mature (M)," as compared to the 83% of games sold rated "Everyone (E)" or "Teen (T)" (53% rated "E" and 30% rated "T"). Three-quarters of the top twenty selling video games were rated "E" or "T."

A record twelve video games sold more than one million units, and of these, nine were rated E or T. "

"family and children's entertainment games are second in PC Sales(20.3%)"
