ragsie, I have NO freaking clue what standard you're using against Half-Life 2, or even it's that's the best standard to use.

But I can at least give you my current experience of it. I went into it with a Half-Life state of mind. I knew both what to expect and to not expect, with a 'I-wonder-what-will-happen-next' mindset mingled with a 'What-choices-will-I-have-when-it-happens' frame. And this is where the game works for me. It's basically a stumbling from one situation to another, and you're allowed flexibility. That I was travelling 'on rails' wasn't nearly as important as the ride itself. Valve is the specialist in this department as no others can be.

I think Jack has a very valid point, that it does well what it's trying to do.

I agree. One needs to enjoy the ride and if you don't, then get off the ride. I think it is similair to complaining about Disneyworld rides being linear. That's the way they are and if you enjoy that sort of thing then you will have a good time.

I compare it most to other games I've played, first and fore-most other FPS:s I've played, like Deus Ex, NOLF and I've played a very little bit of Quake.

I have no idea what a Half-life state of mind is and I haven't played the original Half-life so I have no idea what to expect from the game. It might be that having played HL1 is a prerequisite to enjoy HL2, but I haven't seen that anywhere.

I can accept that. Then it most definitely isn't my cup of tea.

And that's okay!

How 'bout we have coffee instead? Or screw that, let's go and have a drink and some nice nibbles. I'll have a martini. You?

I don't like coffee and I don't drink alcohol, so I prefer my cup of tea, ok?

Half Life 2 was good, but it certainly wasn't anything amazing....they pretty much rushed through the development of the last few stages...

Half-Life 2 is a bit like mustard.

I dislike mustard. It's OK if you mix it with something else, but in Finland it's traditional to use mustard itself as the only spice, and I hate that.

I might actually try that (even though I don't particularily care for the Star Wars universe) after I've finished Neverwinter Nights. Oh, and I've got to finish Baldur's Gate II sometime too. The problem with RPG:s is that they take so damn long time to finish.

Interestingly enough, I didn't play KoTOR for its Star Wars theme (I'm not a Star Wars fan). It's made by Bioware, they have a reputation for RPGs excellent in depth and story. I'm on my second run for this game, and I swear, little things keep emerging that didn't on my first play. I'm ultimately playing it for the deep, winding stories and exploration. Screw the current bona fide adventure game, I want this right now.

EasilyConfused and I have been talking endlessly about it, and she is on her third playthrough!!

I should introduce you to my gf. I introduced her to the game, and she sleeps everyday at 2:00 AM playing it. I really did not expect her to like the game, but she even loves it more than the Sims, which mean a WHOLE LOT seeing how much she loves the Sims

Yes, I know that it's bioware that has made it and that's precisely why I consider buying it and playing it.

Strangely, I never really played KOTOR. My g/f did too, and she hates Star Wars. She just got into the quests, the story, the characters... she's a big bookreader, so my guess is the plot enveloped her. She's the sort of person that reads 600 page novels with small writing in about a day, and English isn't her first language.

Says a lot about Bioware's storytelling talent.

I'm looking for a demo of KOTOR, but can't find any. Is there really no demo for it?

I agree with that. I shelved KotOR after about 12 hours. I resented the inability to explore. Like the markers in the Sand Planet that would stop you from deviating, forcing you where the game wanted you to go. And the story and character were not at all intrguing to me. Fallout did it all better, IMO.
