Well, those asterisks mean the products will be available upon release, so it's not like he's actually playing HL2 right now.

I bought the Silver edition a few days ago - it's ridiculously priced so I'm sorta regretting it now, but I've wasted money on worse things. Having seen how much the Source engine has improved upon the original Counter-Strike, I'm really looking forward to HL2 now - even wandering around the levels should be pretty special, no matter what the game's like. But I have a fair amount of confidence that the game will be moderately awesome.

I'm also really looking forward to HL1 Source though - which is why I grabbed the Silver edition rather than the bog-standard Bronze, which doesn't seem to include HL1 Source, sadly.

Do Day of Defeat and CS:S have cd-keys separate from HL2?

I don't know how they control access - I presume, as these are multiplayer-only, distribution is controlled via Steam, so 'CD-keys' are irrelevant. CS Source seems to be included with every HL2 package, but you seem to need the Silver package via Steam to get DoD. Have a look on the official Steam site, it's all laid out there.

Nice avatar by the way!

What I meant is, imagine you got the bronze pack. It got CS:S and HL2. So what I'm asking is, steam checks the key or something, linked to your profile. My doubt is if CS:S and DoD use separate keys because basically then you'd be paying extra in the silver and gold packs. What I wonder is if DoD is gonna be available for free like in the first HL.

DoD rawks

I'm going to pass on Half-Life 2 for a while. I want the DVD version and Half Life: Source, but I don't want to pay $80. And I'm not paying $55 for the basic CD version. I'm sure I'll be able to get the retail collector's edition through a seller on Amazon or on eBay in 6-8 months for under $50. I mean, I got the Exile collector's edition, which was also really expensive upon release, for $22.46 in September 2003.

There aren't really CD keys if you buy things via steam. Access to the programs are granted to your Steam user account as you buy them. Surely after HL2 launches, Bronze package purchasers should be able to buy DOD:Source separately for a very small fee, unlocking it within your Steam account. That also means for instance, that if you buy a new computer, you just log into Steam with your old account and it will grant you download and playing rights to the games you've purchased.

Point being, you do have to pay, right? That's all I'm asking, believe it or not.

Ahh. Er yes it would seem that way, since the Bronze package doesn't include DOD: Source. But nothing's been announced either way about how that will work post-launch (... to my knowledge?).

steam is a download manager that will allow you do down load half life material such as updates and the actual game. if you download a game you have to buy a registry key and then you can start your download.

Of course he is. He's probably Gabe Newell or something.
