Platformers

Who doesn't love jumping from ledge to ledge, collecting shiny things?
What sort of platformers are your favorites? I'm more interested in newer 3D platformers and not the old mario style. ;)

Favorites are:
Psychonauts
Tomb Raider
American McGee's Alice & Alice Madness Returns
Conker's Bad Fur Day (N64)

even if you don't usually prefer mario style you should really try eversion :P

I don't actually play platformers much these days, but I remember playing games like Chuck Rock, Magic Pockets and such in the Amiga days

Oscar 07-11-2011 06:09 AM

Hm.. eversion? I'm intrigued at the notion of a mario platformer getting darker as you go along.

if you're a masochist, try Super Meat Boy. How long can you last without throwing your computer out the window? ^^

I used to watch my dad play Tomb Raider, so i kind of inherited a admiration for the back problems prone heroine^^. Especially the last three 3D games are very awesome. Tomb Raider: LEgend is the best, especially because it features actually interesting drama and story.

*raises hand*

I hate platformers. :P Except, for some reason, Gods, to which I devoted an inordinate amount of time when I was younger, and which I could probably still play blindfolded.

Super Meat Boy is indeed masochistic. So much hectic trial and error jumping.

DustyShinigami 07-11-2011 11:30 AM

Favorites... hm...

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles
Sonic the Hedgehog 1-3 and Sonic & Knuckles
Braid
Tomb Raider
Bubsy 1 & 2
World of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck
Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse

They're the only ones I can think of off the top of my head...

I can't say Psychonauts as I haven't finished it, and American McGee's Alice isn't particularly a favorite as I found the platforming a bit frustrating.

How could I forget GODS? Wonderful game, I finished it countless times as a kid.

In the sequel, Alice: Madness Returns the platforming is much improved, very forgiving, and it's lots of fun. I think it's a great game.

Hurricane
Earth Worm Jim
Wonder Boy

Yeah... The combat is also greatly improved too.

Earthworm Jim 1 and 2 are very good, and though slightly dated, MDK2 is tons of fun. It's funny too.All games from the now defunct Shiny Entertainment were quite innovative and ahead of their time.

I love the new Alice too.
If you have a PS3, you can get the latest 8-bit Megaman games: 9 and 10: they're great.

Fantasysci5 07-12-2011 09:37 AM

I tried both American McGee's Alice and Psychonauts, and I didn't like either.

I guess jumping from vine to vine just isn't my thing.

TheLongestJourney 07-15-2011 07:18 PM

I've played quite a few platformers. Some of my favorites are

Braid
Cave Story
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Super Mario World
Super Mario 64

I can't wait to try Psychonauts but I'm waiting for the next sale on Steam or Gog before I pick it up.

Axelfish 07-16-2011 01:26 AM

From the oldies, Fury of the Furries remains probably the greatest platformer I've played.
And the music in it is absolutely brilliant.

As far as can remember I've only ever played two platformers. One was Hunchback 2 for the C64, and the other was something about a plumber and a princess. Are you saying there are other games available in the genre?
