Default If only the gaming industry listened to me...

This is the thread where we could discuss and throw around ideas that would make gaming more enjoyable for us.

I'll give you an example and wait to see what your ideas are

(I thought of that when playing DA2)
What if in an RPG instead of fighting waves upon waves of pretty much identical enemies by continuously pushing buttons at random - which gives you pretty much zero satisfaction (at least to me) you had a lot less battles, but those battles actually mattered. You'd actualy have to think of your strategy, exploit your enemy's weaknesses and plan your team's moves.

I'm thinking of going back to the days of baldur's gate or even taking it further to the kind of system featured in the sublime "Valkyria Chronicles" where there's turn based battle but when it's your turn you actually move the player in the battlefield in 3rd person view and chose very carefuly every move (that's really the closest to actual pen and paper RPGs)

Then winning would actually matter

I know you'll say thinking doesn't sell as much as button mashing, but the gratification of winning after hard mental work seems to have worked very well for chess throughout the years...

LOL sounds like exactly what people hated about Prince of Persia. Though I actually liked it. I absolutely agree though.

You know Shadow of Colossus is a great example. Your focus are on enemies with there own look, feel, character, and tactics. No useless fighting, just focusing on an enemy. Each battle was fulfilling.

I really want to play this game, yes! I heard there will be a remake of it for HD so I'm waiting for that...

And which Prince Of Persia are you reffering to?

(In this thread you can also share your own ideas that would make games better)

I want games where you just discover things. Where the story and world gets bigger and bigger forever. Without getting sidetracked by fighting or tricky puzzles.

This is one reason why I loved Zak mcKracken. After discovering alien races and secret history and travelling to other planets I just wanted to go further in every direction! But then the game ended and that was that.

The gaming industry is screwed. Well the PC gaming industry. damn near every worthwhile PC franchise and developer has gone or is multiplatform. The gaming market got ruined by everyone buying games like Halo/COD/MOH each time a reskin came out and gaming companies caught on that people are easily amused and milked for cash. They don't have to try hard anymore on their games, it's a rehash market about graphics and in the process alot of the great companies either folded or sold out and make stupid button mashers with no real gameplay or quality..and they wonder why they lose PC sales through piracy..

The only way you'd get that is by stepping outside and interacting with the real, physical world.

Otherwise you're pretty much limited to the scope of technology, money, and market constraints.

I think it's a great critique and I thought of the same thing while playing DA2. I have no idea why they made the changes they did in that game with the constant fighting and blood splatters which you couldn't even turn off, and I do think it has something to do with button mashers selling more. My favorite RPGs are still the D&D titles from the early 90s, where each battle was critical and you usually left with minimal health or dying. If you didn't use tactics you had no chance, and tactics depended on your party composition, enemy weaknesses and the surrounding environment.

^ This.

While I have no real issue with realism in the games, I sometimes feel that a lot of games designers cover up gaps where narrative or better gameplay should be by attempting to amaze you with the fact that you can do mundane things like "get a haircut!", "book an appointment with an ear doctor!" and "sit on a chair!". The reason I play games is that they're fun and, at their best, a new and potentially innovative art form rather than to replicate things in the real world that I get minimal amounts of enjoyment from.
