Default Looking at Advent Rising

This game is a muti genre combo, a bit of FPS, a bit of RPG, and quite a bit of Adventuring classic...and beautifully done it would appear but i have just begun.....

I have had this game on the shelf for four years..and finally took a chance on a slow night and popped it into the computer and wham. What a start and what a beautiful world it is!!!

It is an ambitious and large world,

you can do a lot of different things including hand to hand combat, flying or operating a large range of vehicles, shuttles, spaceships, both human and alien and there is a fast paced and action packed main story. You get to wander and in the space station where the game starts, you can eavesdrop on all the people who are dynamically present and talking to each other or walking around and there are hundreds ....and learn parts of the story, past and present.

It is just the sort of big world plus fun story plus sci fi game that i love, i am so glad i finally gave it a chance....here are some teaser pics..and i hope to be able to progress more. there are really well done videos that are part of the game and for once, the videos and the in game world and characters are literally identical.

You get to take control and fly space ships, the infro very cleverly shows you some video and then it switches to player control and then back....enjoyable and really immersive...

Enjoy...i am .....

Everything in the world is working, Video monitors, ships moving about on their own, people talking and moving about....it is alive...

Something Smooth and Interesting please...bartender...

my only quibble so far is that it appears there is no Walk option but with all the other positive qualities, i am not complaining too much.

Great game. Sad that the series won't continue.

One of the things that impresses me a lot is the way the development team created and expanded a unique visual style for this game world, it really works and is both beautiful and functional in the way that it "creates" the world.

I've always wanted to play this game but have yet to get around to it, I love ambitious games that attempt to do everything even if they're not entirely successful.

I was the same way and threw it onto my computer last weekend on a whim, and was hooked, i mean everything looks so great, and the people are actually all talking, you get to eavesdrop on them and they are all saying different things about the story....that alone intrigued me enough to keep this going. And the visuals are really remarkable, i am still going thru the tutorials and so just have started out...but it does look intriguing.

This game in my opinion was on par with Beyond Good and Evil. Excellent Voices, Interesting Story, Great Art Direction, and Good Gameplay.

I have refrained from giving my comment until reading this. Imho, A-R is a good game, but clearly inferior to BG&E.

It's difficult to compare two games that belong to different genres, but (again imho) BG&E excels in unfolding a storyline which keeps being interesting as the game is played.

A-R was quite the opposite for me. I won't say more because I don't want to cross into spoilers zone, but I found the amazingly promising initial set-up was very quickly spoiled.

As I said, the game was good, but it could have been much better. Also, it reminded me of Mass Effect an awful lot, I mean, some things are almost the same in both.

thanks for the great comments, i found the opening of Advent Rising quite reminiscent of Mass Effect also, but as it came first i guess the comparison must be weighted in favour of Advent Rising on that account.

re Beyond Good and Evil, i have to say i have tried three times to play and study that game as i understand from what i read that it has an expanding story but some of the simply awful characters you have to bear, that gross pig creature...and the voice acting nd he overly stylized art design....like the green lips and overdone pixe like main character....which were unpleasant rather than interesting.... has turned me off all three times....and the controls are complex beyond need for such simple moves....for the battles for instance, it becomes really a matter of grinding and that takes the fun out of it for me. But that is another topic i suppose, i do feel for those reasons that it has far far less to compare to than Advent Rising but as i said, i have not progressed very far in Beyond Good and Evil and i must keep a final opinion on that account open. For now, AR looks fun and interesting and the opening areas are really very cool..tho i am cautious and know that behind that facade may lurk repetition and formlae approaches to areas and characters both and NPC. Lets see how it goes..

Yet Advent Rising came out about four years before the first Mass effect. If you think its unjustifyed to compare AR, a quality product to BG&E, then I can say that BG&E is a complete rip off to Zelda Ocarina and is completely inferior.

I guess there is no remedy if you don't like the characters, but I would like to make a strong point that the story is much better told in BG&E. I don't want to spoil your gaming, but wait until you finish, or play more AR, and I think you'll see what I mean.

I was giving due credit to AR for anticipating ME, it was on the "plus" side of my post.

As for the Ocarina rip-off, I can't comment on that, I'd love to play that game some time. But that would not make the game worse, only less original.

Yeah, exactly. I really liked the gameplay mechanics of Ocarina. It really made BG&E so much more accessible/playable. It never bothered me at all.

AR and BG&E were brilliantly designed games.
