Disclaimer: These pictures were taken from the latest edition of PC Gamer (May 2004), but are originally from PC Gamer (September 1999).

The only way i know to check the answers is to use google image search, or looking up the September 1999 PC Gamer issue.

Thanks for the high-res pics, jaap, they helped a lot. Well, I can safely say that I know my Game Gods. A reason might be that I have them on my wall at home, so I look at them more or less every day. I still can't remember four of them though.

Oh man, I have that issue of PC Gamer (the one from 99) buried somewhere back home. Nostalgia central.

Crap! Erik Yeo. I should have known that one.
I've gotta say that Jordan Mechner is very hard to recognize on that picture.

No, it's not Romero. I don't think he has glasses (and he's not a god either for that matter ) Kolzig is right, it's Justin Chin. I should have recognized him, but one can't remember everything now, can one?
And you're right about 20 also, Kolzig, Bruce Carver is his name. Should have rememberd that also...

I only knew a few. I don't really follow that sort of stuff. I couldn't identify many of my favorite authors, the members of some of my favorite bands, or even some of my favorite movie directors. It's their work I like, not them. So I would say you aren't weird at all.

Part two:

which games made them 'gamegods'?
Or: name the games they've created.

And indeed Al Lowe should have been on the pictures!
And Alexey Pajitnov (Tetris).

Ok, with many of these persons it’s rather hard to say exactly which game has made them the game gods they are today, but I’ll try to pick a game or two, or a game series for every person which they’re best known for or which best shows their greatness…

Spoiler:

1. Andy Hollis – A big bunch of flight simulators, many for Jane’s Combat Simulations
2. Norm Koger – Kolzig mentioned that he has made many strategic games for SSI. I’ll take his word for it, because this really isn’t my area of expertise.
3. Sid Meier – Probably the biggest game god of them all. I could name tens of games, but the most important series of games is without a doubt the Civilization series
4. Steve Meretzky – Well, this was before my time, but I’m pretty sure he made one or two Zork games.
5. Chris Taylor – Total Annihilation
6. Bruce Shelley – Age of Empires series
7. John Carmack – Doom series, Quake series
8. Chris Roberts – Wing Commander series
9. Warren Spector – System Shock, Thief, Deus Ex
10. Richard Garriott – Ultima series
11. Brian Reynolds – Civilization II & III
12. Peter Molyneux – Populous, Black & White
13. Justin Chin - Dark Forces & Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II (like Kolzig mentioned earlier)
14. Will Wright – SimCity series, The Sims
15. Roberta Williams – King’s Quest
16. Hal Barwood – Indiana Jones series
17. Tim Schafer – Grim Fandango
18. Larry Holland – X-Wing series
19. Erik Yeo – Command & Conquer
20. Bruce Carver – Links series
21. Ron Gilbert – Monkey Island 1 & 2
22. Mike O'Brian – Battle.net (which Kolzig mentioned)
23. Jordan Mechner – Prince of Persia series
24. Gabe Newell – Half-Life
25. Brett Sperry – Kyrandia series, Command & Conquer
