thinking of buying a DS
so I've noticed that the DS seems to be gathering a formidable army of adventure games in it's armada and as I'm planning to do a lot of traveling (mostly by train) over the next few months investing in a hand-held is seeming a good idea (it's that or an ebook reader but there's just something inherently offputting in a book that's not a book)
so anyone who has a DS able to offer any advice for or against this cunning plan? am I likely to become embroiled in a whole new array of never before played adventure games or disappointed by a spew of cheap pc conversions and poor quality exclusives? to put it bluntly, should I or should I not spend my hard earned cash on a DS? and if so what games would be recommended?

Well, it's easily the leading games device of this generation, but I assume that you'll only play adventure games.
Unfortunately, Cing just declared bankruptcy (and won't reconstitute), so the 3 of their 4 "Memory" series games that are on the DS will be all. Those are great mood pieces. Those are for the Syberia or Kheops fans like me, though. Ace Attorney/Perfect Prosecutor make the purchase worth it, however. No question. Get 1. Both series are getting more and more scarce, so act now. |

Ehh don't get one. I bought a DS like 2 years ago, and sold it like 6 months later. I just found that no good games are really released for it, and the ones I usually wanted to play (like Golden Sun) were for the GBA anyway. Actually, maybe do buy it for the great GBA games, since there are only like 6 good DS games anyway.
Also, I guess with the new version with a bigger and brighter screen, it might be better, but I was always holding the stupid thing like 4 inches (or 9 cm for you brits) from my face. I'm a 24 yr old man with a licensed gun for gods sake! |

Go ahead but you may find some difficulty finding older adventures like Phoenix Wright - Ace Attorney like GhaleonQ said. In most cases, avoid the pc ports. most of them are somehow inferior the originals. Also, there are a lot of great non-adventure games like Mario Kart DS, Advance Wars: Days of Ruin, Nintendogs, Scribblenauts, Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, Chrono Trigger DS, and many others but that depends on your preferences.
I personally like the DS Lite better for its price and GBA compatibility but I think the new DSi XL is a nice deal too, if you don't mind the size.

i have had mine for 5 years now, i got it second hand and its an original blue one and i can say i love it more than i did when i first got it.
The re are loads of games on it that are fun. i agree some pc ports are not good but if you find you travel alot or find you have an hours lunch break playing them on the ds is not so bad. tunguska 2 i played recently on it and i liked that didnt like the first 1. the ace attorney games are very good i would ebay them. runaway is not that bad on it. The consol is going from strenght to strength and so yes cing did release the worse news ever, im sure the developers and writers will work there way back. Plus look at the number of ds games that are set to be released. If in doute get the original second hand they are now about 30 pounds in gamestation or game and try it out, or if you can get the new which i will admit does not really really really good .. except the coulors.

Nintendo announced a new DS with 3D coming out this year.
Not much details, but we will see it playable at E3.

I saw this too and I find very strange of them to make such announcement about the same time they're releasing the DSi XL outside of japan. Doubt I'll buy it any time soon though.

If you do get one - make sure it's an original DS or DSlite and not the DSi as it's region locked. Keep your options open I'd say.

I sold off my DSi since I came to realize that my iPhone had replaced it.

I just got a Nintendo Dsi XL - yep, the one with the HUGE screens! Best gaming system I've ever owned! I have 60 games on it - 48 of them are adventure games. I'm playing "Flower, Sun Rain" and it's quite good, Therisia dear Emily was also very good and the game Hotel Dusk is a must play. Currently, for every PC adventure game I get - I get 4 DS adventure games so it is by far my system of choice now.

I envy you. I already have the Lite model, so there isn't much reason for me to upgrade, but I wanted a XL for 100 Classic Books.

wow, that is A LOT of DS adventure gaming. What are your favorites? i'm looking at broken sword, time hollow, and the new jake hunter game. ordered them along with a DSi XL, and hope to be playing by some time next week. don't really know where to go adventure-wise after that though. (besides ace attorney series)

haven't seen the DS version of So Blonde in shops here, but I picked up Broken Sword today and love it, despite the missing voice acting. I'm going to look up some DS exclusives too so I have something new to play, recommendations appreciated

I have some questions on the DS:
What do you pay on average for the games? Can you also download games to the DS? Is there a lively second hand market? |

always buying it trough ebay / craigslist / amazon for a used copy. Usually i spent $5 - $20 for 1 game. (when you see the game on amazon check the small "Used" link on the item description). |
