Default Japanese Horror games

"Project Zero/Fatal Frame" or "Forbidden Siren/Siren" what games in the two series are the best?

Based on what I've read it seems that Project Zero is the most interesting of the two IMO. Anyone who played all games in both of the series and could give som professional advice?

Project Zero/ Fatal frame. Forbidden Siren is an awkward game in so many ways that it only works for the most perserverant of gamers.

The three Fatal Frame/Project Zero games that have been released outside Japan are superb. I think the second one is a little better than the other two though.

Forbidden Siren is incredibly hard and trying on the players patience. But quite a few hard core survival/horror gamers hold it as one of the best games ever. I only managed to get a couple of hours into it, but intend to try it again sometime. Haven't tried Forbidden Siren 2 or Blood Curse.

Fatalframe 3 is best of series, it has better story, and better progression, and way more creative scares. The best part was your own home, that keeps on transforming after each dream, you explore your house to get new revelations and well more shocking(sometimes subtle) unexpected scenes.

The whole series though is repetitive, if you have one choice buy FF3.

Siren is for those with patience , so avoid it, however Siren on ps3 is very streamlined, to suit casuals, and westerners, since it include foreigners too in storyline.
The graphics and artdirection is more beeter, it got good ratings, 9 form eurogamer, better than silenthill5 and first 2 fatlaframes, as a game you must play it let alone horror.
So FF3 first and then Siren ps3.
There is another game called Hauntingground for PS2 by Capcom, its psychological horror with disturbing suggestive themes, gameplay similar to clock tower, highly recommended to all advenrture/horror lovers.

Or Demento as it's called in certain parts of the world.

did you know Haunting Ground was originally to be Clocktower 4? But the story was so radically different they changed its name.

Anyway, Haunting Ground is strictly for perverts... which is why I once owned a copy

It's not really a scary game though... just disturbing in a perverted way.

Clock Tower 3 has its moments though.

I always thought Fatal Frame had a solid system for horror gaming. Its just really creepy looking through a camera and seeing such things that you usually don't see with your own sight. Reminds me of using the night vision on my camera, just to see where I am going, and seeing something move past it. Its freaking creepy.

Its on a league of its own.

Indeed I bought Forbidden Siren when it first came out in the UK but found it incredibly difficult. Having to change perspective to that of the enemies was time consuming and my tolerance didn't last very long (even though usually nothing will daunt me).

Project Zero/Fatal Frame on the other hand is indeed a very accessible horror game and the idea of taking camera shots of ghosts is sure to pull in the players - even if I was bad at waiting at the last minute til the cursor turned red to do most damage xD

YEah demento was Japanese name, loved sexual undertones, heck the whole womb concept and how everyone(boss) leeches at you for same purpose, the maid is surely creepy when she breaks glass with her head...loved overall aesthetics and dog game mechanic, plus puzzles were really refreshing, custscens were really welldone, deathscenes, and music overall i loved this series than CT. I want sequel badly , i always imagine sequel on capcom's Framework engine, hope if they make it they dont make it casual and user friendly.

CT1 was tight on PS1 but rest were budget titles.

Not Japanese but Obscure is pretty decent.

For something different , you can always try Michigan : Report from hell where you play a camera man. The game is certainly different from anything else out there for sure.

Which other game can have you sneaking up on your soundman in the shower.

If you think Haunting ground is strictly for perverts , what do you think of Michigan then ?!

Hmmm... the Project Zero/Fatal Frame's look interesting. I'll have to check those out at some point.

Unfortunately I have just tried Resident Evil and Silent Hill. But been looking into trying Fatal Frame/Project Zero series, so nice to hear that the third game is the best. I used to find it dirt cheap but it probably is hard to find now.

Haunted Ground I have been tempted to buy due to the panic and dog mechanics. Not too fond of the thought of hiding away from monsters but I bet its brilliant .

What did you guys think of the Gregory Horror Show game? *it has a unique style*
I also used to find it dirt cheap and never understood how the game played (or how the reception would fit my taste) even when knowing about the game beyond its release date in the past.

There are no "monsters" in haunting ground , just a bunch of psychopaths , once you managed to get pass one , you will get to face another. A lot of running around since you are a petite little girl and siccing the dog on whoever is chasing you to slow them down and then hiding away until the danger pass. Poor hewie the dog , always get abused and mistreated.
Never did finished this , have to find a time to play this again and finish it.

The suffering , though not japanese, had a good atmosphere.

Rule of Rose (unfortunately , i never played the game but it's supposed to be psychological horror like haunting ground ? The cutscenes looks very similar to those of haunting ground)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=te_No0dapPY

There's also Kuon , set in japanese period times.

Of course , if you understand Japanese , you can go for the fmv game "The Fear"

Suffering is ace, tight storytelling, creative monster designs, mulitple endings and nice VAs, the sequel is not bad though but renders part 1 useless.

Ruleofrose is full of sexual, lesbian, underage disturbing S&M undertones, but classic story and beautifully told, work of art but extremely broken gameplay.

kuon is so so, gameplay is broken with disturbing atmosphere, not recommended for first play, only if you are finished with other horrors.

Yeah, the Suffering is quite a unique game, from story to game play. I wouldn't have thought it would scare me, but it did just that and creeped the hell out of me. An interesting concept.

Part 2 was great, but it did involve some of the story from the first game from what I remember, so it only renders the first game useless to a degree. Definitely recommended.
