Mass Effect 2 video shows us the darker side of things | Joystiq 5/19/09

Quote:

The second installment of BioWare's sci-fi action series finally gets more video love today, and this time it's not telling us that the main character is dead. Instead we notice ... well, we'll just let the above video, "Prelude to E3," speak for itself. Just please stop toying with our fragile emotions, already! We'll have hands-on Mass Effect 2 goodness from E3 soon, where we look forward to "killing someone a thousand times."
The video is embedded in the article and shows glimpses into the new gameworld and details in it.

Loved the first one, it was like one big homage to Sci-fi. I'm looking forward to this sequel.

Man, it's shaping up pretty damn nicely. Recently I've been replaying KotOR and Jade Empire and will probably replay Mass Effect soon. I love the idea that the choices you made in the first game will actually carry on. It's something I hoped would be done for KotOR 2, so that's probably what I'm most excited about for now. Let's just hope the game has a little more scope outside of the main story. Side quests are our friends. :D

This game will be awesome. The first one was the first game in a long time that made me feel passionate about a video game.

Cannot. Wait.

UPtimist 05-19-2009 07:18 AM

Looks interesting :P

I hope that (even though this might sound silly) it's easy to choose between different playthroughs when you start the new game. I'm sure that if you've finished it like four times, if they don't do a good implementation it can get really confusing, difficult and/or irritating to continue the story (from the first ME) that you want.

Did anyone else notice that the doggy-robots at around 1:15 are almost exactly like the (*check Wiki*...) Houndeyes from Half-Life? :P Well, robot versions of them...

D.C. 05-21-2009 08:44 PM

IGN posted a preview a few days ago, focusing on the choices and how they will impact not just the second game but also the third! Consider me psyched, more so! :D

Elven 05-22-2009 03:06 AM

I though Mass Effect was okay, but I didnt like it as much as the other games Bioware have worked on. And it's nothing compared to Baldur's Gate of course :D

This sequel looks sweet though, hope it comes out alright. I am kind of mroe looking forward to Dragon Age though...I also hope EA's acquisition of Bioware doesnt reduce the company to releasing rushed, incomplete or simply poor games... It's been known to happen :(

NEW TRAILER

Yes, Shepard is alive and well (and customizable, natch).

D.C. 06-02-2009 05:19 PM

There's an extended version of that trailer making the rounds too, although it looks like it may be a little heavier on the spoilers. Here's the link. It's good to see Seth Green back as Joker. I know I've said it before, but I can't wait to see how the choices of the first game will alter this one. I'm also diggin' the flying cars. It's like the world of tomorrow... today. ;) IGN has posted an updated preview too, if you're interested.

Well the game franchise has been planned as a trilogy from the start, so of course, hehe :D As much as I liked the Mass Effect, there were a bunch of things I hoped they will fix in the second and third games. For one, the sidequests, which were just dull. They also need to speed up the battle system and hotkeys a little bit, just too clunky in the first game.

Having said that, the universe they created was freakin awesome, and I love the style, and film grain is the s**t for cutscenes.

D.C. 06-08-2009 07:07 PM

It's one thing to promise all that stuff, it's another thing to follow through. BioWare seems to have delivered like always and that makes me happy. :D Have you guys seen the direct feed videos from e3? Potential spoilers a-plenty, though. It's looking very cinematic, more so than the first which is saying something!

Major disappointment, you can't recruit old members of squad, they will play roles as NPC's only, seriously this is crap!

That's not necessarily true....

What if you get your old party members forced of you - sort of - at the start of the game...

edit: (possible spoilers)

Please look at this thread at the Bioware Mass Effect 2 forums where the developers say that the old squad from ME1 will be in the game....

From what little of what I heard of Mass Effect 2, it is turning out to be a brilliant game. They seem to have addressed my biggest complaints from the first one (mainly how lame the non-story missions and the planet exploration were). Between this and Dragon Age, I have my RPG fix for a long time. And let's not forget, both of them have sensual experiences in them :D

You know, Mass Effect completely blew my mind because I had not played KoTOR or Jade Empire. Now that I have, I am not that anxious about ME 2, after all. Plus, it will not run on my hardware anyway (PC).

One thing no-one has mentioned here (I think) but was criticized in ME was that there were just one real PC one could control directly. That, and the bizarre inventory allocation system.

Mass Effect 2 brings countless improvements, updates | Ars Technica

Quote:

...I spoke with the founders of Bioware, and they told me just how much work has gone into the dialog system... it has taken much more than one game to get it this smooth. "The dialog system itself?" they said. "We've worked on it, and we can show you how we've gotten to Mass Effect 2 over five or six years, and multiple games... Knights of the Old Republic, Jade Empire, it took a long time to figure out the technology to deliver it."

All that effort paid off, with a fluid, twisting story that you help to create with your actions and words. This is a theme we saw in Heavy Rain as well; both games want to help you to tell your story, and both games give you enormous freedom to do that. In fact, the dialog system has one interesting new addition: the interrupt. During certain points in a conversation, an icon will pop up, and in most cases you'll choose to ignore it. If you're tired of listening to someone though, hit the Left Trigger when the icon pops up. Your character will end the conversation... violently. In our demo, Shepard surprises a character by, in mid-sentence, shoving him out of a window. Don't particularly care what someone has to say? Shut them up with a bullet... or worse.
I remember the plan to put the interrupt feature in the dialogue system in the first Mass Effect, and how, if you use it often enough in a conversation, the character will get mad and not give you any more information. The feature was never put in then.

Actually i loved asari chick and others too wernet that bad, having them on whole quest and commenting ON and IN (between) missions was cool aspect. I grew attachment specially with asari chick, whom of which i want more in sequel. Not sex perse but presence as ally in my teammate. Gotta rinse savefile in which i had nailed her and lost ashley(and saved wrex).

See the (amazing) Mass Effect 2 gameplay we saw at E3 | Joystiq (video)

Quote:

More than a month after we got our hands on the E3 2009 build of Mass Effect 2, BioWare has finally released footage to back up what we saw and played. It's a sort of "developer's cut:" The video features good looks at character interaction, combat and exploration -- all in-game -- along with commentary on these systems by the game's makers.

Just be forewarned that there's discussion of the series' plot and one potential ending for Mass Effect 2, in the event you don't actually want those things spoiled for you. Of course, you could always turn the sound off and just enjoy the amazing-looking visuals.
They're not kidding. Major spoilage or mere plot detail depending on how you take it, but such detail can drastically alter your experience in Mass Effect 3 when that one comes out. Watch at own risk. Regardless, it's definitely an arousing show & tell.

Wow, I need to finish the first game stat!

Crunchy in milk 07-12-2009 01:43 PM

I haven't yet visited all these links, (will later). Does the Mako make a return? I kind of liked that aspect of the game despite some of the tedious worlds to navigate (all sharp mountains). I just wondered why so far in the future the damn car doesn't have a stereo.

I was dead sick of playing frogger by the end though, they HAVE to come up with some varied mini-games!
