I'm replaying quake 1
Wow, I remember it being a great shooter when I first played it in the mid 90's and it's the game ( along with doom ) that inspired me to continue with fps. I just reinstalled it and it's still as great to play as ever. I really expected it to be horrible to play now but it's not. The weapon sounds are solid, and the best thing is, the strafejumping is on a par with quake 3, whereas in quake 4, the strafejumping just doesn't feel as good.
I didn't even know about strafejumping when I first played quake, but being an online quake 3 player since 2002, I'm expert now. |

ahh the old days Duke Nukem was awesome! .. but dang there's too much fps nowadays ..imo strafejumping is simply stupid, once i saw my ex-girlfriend playing online some fps .. everyone shooting (thats cool) AND everyone always jumping ..
maybe it would be better for me to post this in the "Unpopulor Opinions" |

Strafejumping done right gives you tons of speed and distance in a very quick time. If you play anyone who's half decent you'd have little to no chance of getting any frags, and definitely no armour and pickups. More so if if you're duelling rather than DM. The other player, assuming he can strafejump quite well, will simply get to all the important areas before you, pick up everything, and cut off all your routes

I got it when it first came out. I just wonder if it installs on XP. I've got the game patch and the 3D accelerator patch but to load it, it goes through an MS-DOS routine. Haven't tried it yet on the new system.
I always thought Quake I and II were great. Even did my fair share of Death Matches using the good ole Quake Spy, find a server and jump in with my blazing fast connection with the 33.6 modem. I still remember that being online was annoyingly slow even though there was no such thing as high speed internet at the time.

I wish id would make a proper Quake sequel one day. You know, the first Quake. Quake 2, Quake 3 and Quake 4 were completely different games, they had absolutely nothing to do with the setting and the story of the first one.

Quake had a story? Man, I should replay this game, 'cause I obviously missed something!

Yep, after each "episode" you would get a short written summary of events.

You're my man! Sweet memories of axing zombies co-op style (ROTFL, those suckers won't STAY DOWN!!!1 ) Also: What happened to the Nine Inch Nails Product Placements™? Also: I think I read somewhere that Quake2 wasn't meant to be a Quake sequel (nor carrying the Quake name) at all. In any case, that game bored me out of my skull. Did Quake receive a nice community makeover like Doom (and all games based on that engine) did? Mouselook, 3d chip/TCP/IP support, etc.etc.

Quake 1 is still one of the best straightforward deathmatch fps games around.
The gameplay in Quake is so perfectly polished that I haven't seen any game come and surpass it. Not even Q3A. The rocket jumps, strafe jumps and excellent level designs, it's all there. I should re-install it and play some duels with a couple of friends, I know I always lost to them, but it was still such an adrenaline rush to play Quake deathmatches.

Did you watch any of the recent quakecon? You can watch the videos of the finals of Q1 and Q2. They called the quake competition 'quad damage' and it was about finding the overall quake master spanning Q1, Q2, Q3 and Q4. http://www.esreality.com/?a=post&id=1427998 |
