The major difference with Prey and Duke Nukem Forever is that 3D Realms outsourced Prey to Human Head (way back in 2001-2002). DNF, however, is still being developed in-house at 3DR, with constant employee shifting and delays.

Even if they finish it (It's DNF's 10th anniversary in April, here's hoping for actual screenshots/videos) it'll never be more than a moderately successful game. 3DR has wasted tons of money, resources and time on the project, when they could have already released several games in a row.

I agree. I don't even understand how they can afford keep putting it off... if it was any other company, they would have been broke many years ago.

Are they constantly reworking graphics or what? I don't get it. It's not like Doom 3 wasn't obsolete less than a year after it came out. Graphics don't last.

I hear they've cut their losses by using the content for other games.

They were just tech demos. Remember the old quake engines fly-throughs that showed off lighting, models, textures, etc? Imagine that with a duke environment. None of it was ever playable - the most input I had was moving a camera in one of them.

Yea - first it was the quake engine, then quake 2 engine, then the unreal engine, then an upgraded unreal engine (mainly because by this time it's 1999 and they ha already promised the game by this year at the 1998 E3), and then most recently a heavily modified unreal 2 engine.

Broussard loves to brag that they pretty much rewrote the engine - which i think is crap - why reinvent the wheel (especially 6 years after you where supposed to have finished the wheel).

Every engine change requires new textures, new models, new physics engines, etc... The reason for the constant changes is:

A: Team picks engine
B: Team develops for engine
C: Team quits/gets canned
D: Developing is delayed
E: Engine is now dated
F: Repeat A-F 4 more times.

Really? There seem to be some clearly playable bits in this trailer. This one, too.

I don't understand why they have to start from scratch. That engine looks pretty good(first one), and the game looks pretty much done too in that trailer.

The engine looks good because of the shoddy quality of the video. If you saw it in a proper resolution and compared it to today's games, the difference would be striking.

But I do hope they keep at least some of the elements shown in that trailer because it really makes Duke Nukem Forever look like The Best Game Ever™.

It doesn't look so good to me. I understand they wouldn't want to release it like that, but it's just taking too long.

The whole thing about "it's done when it's done" and "it's finished, it's just management and polish from here on out" is really annoying. If the game is done, then release screenshots and give the fans some hope. if not, well, then don't say it's done. That particular screenshot is some light at the end of the tunnel, but it could certainly just be nothing as well.

For the past 6 years I've always felt that the E3 2001 trailer of DNF is the best trailer for an fps game ever.

Just so much kick to the balls action and pure Duke feeling.

Those were all in-house shots/videos. They never released anything playable to the public, media, or marketing teams.

It looks good because they had around 30 percent of the level completed. Thats like making a movie trailer out of 1o minutes of movie you have filmed and then trying to convince people you have another 2 hours of footage in the back.

A teaser trailer was released on the 19th. Short, but awesome.

Deja Vu.

Almost like someone already posted the trailer in the news thread.

I'm not sure I like the new realistic Doom-like look of the enemies and the game. Part of Duke Nukem 3D's charm was its cartoony look (at the time, since they probably couldn't achieve realistic looking graphics back then).

If I compare Doom and Duke, I'm not sure I agree that Duke is so much more cartoony in appearance. (Actual content is another matter, but we're talking about the look here.)

Duke is going to kick ass, once again.
