Interesting name...
As much as I like it, I don't see why they didn't just keep it the Revolution, at least in the States where Wii isn't going to be cute. |

Well Nintendo has always been different, and heres a classic example. People said the Nintendo DS was going to be bad, and it sold out multiple times, nintendo made a huge stack of cash from the system, not to mention its games selling out too. Wii is just a name, its about the hardware and games. At first the Xbox sounded silly at first but you got used to it. So don't bash the system just because of the name, wait for the games.

evolution did sound much better though, but hey, it´s not up to us to decide..It would have been cool if they would have made a poll/competition, what people would have liked name it..

This is a great name change. The fact that it has so many different meanings/connotations is even better. Revolution was as cliche.

It just seems like a cheesy attempt to be Apple. It feels like a name created by a large committee (probably because that's exactly what happened, as Game Informer has an interview about it) and it seems as though it was both overworked and underthought.
Nintendo has also been comparing it to Napster, Google and Yahoo for names that sound stupid but worked. What they seem to forget is that they all started as tiny projects that worked their way up, so people gradually got used to it and by the time they reached the masses, there was already a substantial following to lend them credibility. Wii has just been sprung on absolutely everyone from left field. It also just sounds weird as a product name. "Wii" has no hard sounds at all and is very short, making it seem weak and wispy. The fact that it's also pronounced the same as an extremely common word (which isn't a noun) doesn't help matters either. "I want to buy a Wii" just sounds bizarre because it in no way resembles how "we" sounds like it should be used. Names like Xbox and Playstation were lame when we first heard them, but they never sounded awkward when used in a sentence and that's a hurdle this is going to have to overcome. I'm not saying they should have stuck with the Revolution, and I fully support more interesting console names. But this one sucks. |

I want a Wii so badly, I'm busting.
It doesn't look so great in print (the w and two i's) at first glance I took it as WWII. I thought the makes a splash headline and the golden shower nickname where great posts. I hope it is always officially referred to as the golden shower. It goes well with the free wii (free willy?) controller that is utter wank. |

Simply awful. I can't even bring myself to make a joke about it, it's all too obvious and tiresome.
I think they'd have been better off calling it the GameTurd than this. Why do they always have to ditch the interesting development names? Dolphin and Star Cube were both better names than Gamecube. Chicago is more interesting a name than Windows 95. Cold Fusion was a better name than Power Macintosh 8100. |

I've seen people mention the DS several times in this thread, but that really isn't the same thing. I don't understand how Nintendo are going to sell a console with a name pronounced "Wee" to the general public. Yes, it's all over the net, but I find it just a tad unlikely that it's the kind of name the casual gamer - a large part of Nintendo's target demographic - are going to go for. At least DS has an obvious meaning and is a name with no other implications; at issue there was the idea of the technology, not the branding or marketing plans. Here they've got a console with the difficult-to-sell ideas and a ridiculous name; they're just shooting themselves in the foot, surely?
I mean, seriously: how am I going to persuade non-gamers to try Wii™? |

I honestly can't see what the fuss is about. Sure, it's not the best name ever, but what does it really matter one way or another? It's just a name for a product. It's just such... a non-issue.

I think it's a non-issue to a lot of people here precisely because we see the potential of the console itself. But if I was telling you about an iPod for the first time, and it had been called the Apple Pu™, would you not have laughed at me?
