Default How do you wipe out the memory of a GBA cartridge?

I have a question to you Nintendo junkies. I just bought a used copy of Advanced Wars for the GBA (the original one) from EBGames last sunday, because I couldn't find a new one in any retail store I went to. Awesome game, but the only problem is that a lot of the stuff on it is already unlocked (or at least I think it is). Does anyone know how to wipe out all the memory from a GBA cartridge or is that even possible?

I guess it depends on the game cart in question. I just did a quick search on and someone suggests to clear the save file of Advance Wars, before turning on the GBA, hold and press L + Right + Select, then turn on the GBA. Dunno if this will do what you're after.

Thanks Dale, I'll give it a try when I go home. By the way I am playing it on a DS but I guess that still holds.

I think you'd remove not only the memory of the player, but also the memory that the game is comprised of if you tried that.

There's almost always a menu option to erase progress. I don't know where that option is on Advance Wars, though. Oh, and L-R-Select isn't a way to wipe memory, it's just how you reset.

actually i think that it is in fact correct (L+R+Select=correct), some of the GBA titles are funny like that and one i had before required me to do something like that aswell.

The clear memory code is in the manual of all GBA games - look for it in that.

The games aren't stored on magnetic tape/discs, neither are the saves. Holding a magnet to anything with metal components is probably a bad idea though.

I see. Well, I don't know that much about Gameboy cartridges of any kind. I never had one, and only played once or twice with the one of my grand cousins.

I've always played on computers that had some kind of magnetic storage media. The earliest would be my Amiga 500.

I'm intrigued though, by what technique is data stored on those cartridges then?

A ROM chip, and a Flash chip I believe from looking at the insides of one.
