Default Alternative to traditional adventure games?

I'm currently looking for some 3D game as to try something from the traditional adventure genres. I've tried the demo of DOOM 3 and it's far too hectic and fastpaced for me. I've read about Thief and I'm wondering if you guys think the Thief series are any good? If so which one should I get and are there other games I might like.

PS: I've tried and really enjoyed System Shock 2 and Deus Ex.

Which one(s) would you recommend from
  • The Metal Age
  • The Dark Project
  • Deadly Shadows

From an objective standpoint the second game, The Metal Age, is probably the best: it took the best elements of The Dark Project and took them forwards.

The Dark Project is let down by an overuse of zombie-filled levels (the things are nasty), but was fun when it was first released.

Deadly Shadows, I suspect most people would say, is the easiest of the three (which may be the reason I've completed it). It has the best graphics, of course, but smaller levels and a slight console feel to it at times (having been developed for the Xbox too). You also have the option to play in either first or third person.

Any of them is good, though .

Then you should definitely check out DEUS EX which is the best game ever made...
Spoiler:
You can either agree with me or be wrong...

Its sequel DEUS EX: INVISIBLE WAR wasn't anywhere near as brilliant but still better than most games out there...

By all means go ahead. My spelling has been corrected about a zillion times on this forum, and by various people I might add.
This is because
a) I can't spell
b) I can't be bothered to read what I type and just type away...

In case you aren't referring to me...
By all means still check my spelling and correct me.
I won't get mad, I promise...

Spoiler:
But I'm willing to bet that my Dutch is still better than yours

Of course, a spell-checker would have found no problem with the word "it's". You'll need to be a grammar-checker instead .

Thank you (both of you).
I stand corrected..
And just in case you guys haven't got anything better to do...
I am quite certain that in my future posts I will make many more errors in my spelling as well as in my grammar...

have fun!

MdaG: if you're the kind of person who enjoys old DOS games, the original System Shock is well worth a go.

Dark Veil: it was meant to be tongue-in-cheek; sorry if you were offended .

Mr. Pinky: Sorry if I seemed offended, 't was just my self defense mechanism kicking in...

That and I really hate myself for not checking my own damn spelling...

Yes, the Thief series is brilliant, and I'd say it's a safe bet considering you liked SS2 and Deus Ex. A couple of months ago, I finally got around to playing Deadly Shadows, after replaying The Dark Project and The Metal Age - close to the best 2-3 weeks of gaming I've ever had .

I'd definitely recommend starting with The Dark Project (playing all three in order would be best though ). For my money, the plot, atmosphere and presentation of TDP are superior to those of both sequels. It's also really worth trying to get your hands on Thief: Gold (which is the original Dark Project but includes an extra three levels, two of which are superb).

The Metal Age, which uses the same technology as TDP, is a basically more of the same, and plays like a very big (and lovingly crafted) expansion. I found the first half of TMA a little 'bleh' compared to TDP but, after that, it really comes into its own (be warned the final level is hard as nails though).

Deadly Shadows is good, but not without it's problems ( *shamelessly pimps own review*). Also, it's probably better appreciated once you've experienced TDP and TMA.

Best alternatives to traditional AGs:

Anachronox : RPG with a lot of exploration, inquiries, character interaction, in a Blade Runner-ish setting, with a great story and a nice atmosphere. I couldn't recommend this one enough.

Beyond Good and Evil : hard to describe; basically is an incredibly charming action game, with a lot of exploration and thinking to do, and the action is right on an AGer's alley (fun, but not hard). Characters are great. Sweet game, really.

Morrowind : The RPG, with "unlimited" freedom; read one main quest and hundreds of side quests. 100+ hours of gameplay.
