Show me you can swing a lightsaber, little guy, and I'll love you like no other!

Ouch Who the hell got promoted and decided to try and prove something by rebranding the company? The LucasArts logo we've known for the past 13 years is pretty iconic and recognizable, and I don't think they really gain anything by further abstracting it into a curvy thing. A bad move IMO. Nothing gained on their part but a harder to decipher logo. Quote:
They simlified it long ago. In the late 90s they got rid of all the jagged edges and speckles and stuff and turned it into straight line art -- And is this new logo really that much more simplified? Seems to me they went from a pretty straightforward iconic thing to a half-witted "designer"'s abstracted "reimagined" version which has even more arbitrary curves and pointy bits than the old one. The new typeface is fine, and it's possibly more than time for them to lose the big purple "L" bordering the logo with its blasting early 90's typography, but the new logo is so lame. It just screams "hip designer who doesn't know what he's doing" here today re-rebranded tomorrow dotcom design. Fail. Last edited by Jake; 09-05-2005 at 07:11 AM. |

I am not a designer, but from what I understand of design principles, that logo is not just bad. It is god-awful.
The torso is formed at the tangent of two curves. It's not even a shape in itself, just those two curves bleeding into each other. Bill Tiller talks about bad tangents: "when lines converge on each other in a confusing and uninteresting way." That's exactly what we have here. Secondly, the weight of the lines. Is that meant to convey depth? So is his left leg far behind his right, yet his right arm far behind his left? That's one contorted position. Beyond the ergonomic issues, the tapering width of the lines makes it unclear where they actually end, and thus confuses the outline of the figure. The left leg, particularly, just appears to fade away into the background. Spindly points like that are exactly the opposite of a bold, clear design. All that, and also being strongly reminiscent of the AIM logo, one of the most iconic figures in the computer industry? In fact, it also bears a passing resemblance to the (much better) logo for Save The Children: If I was Lucas, I would fire the designer who came up with this.

Or rather, fire the company president who picked this particular artist's design.

Yeah, that looks really good. Lame that the new logo isn't just that instead.

That does look better than either official logo. It's too much to dream that someone at LA is reading this, right?

Mind you, I find the change in logo of Epic Games equally appalling. The old logo had so many memories for me, whilst the new one looks completely generic. Oh, and I love the way that this topic is in General Gaming. Because LucasArts are nothing to do with adventure games . |
