Al Emmo

Okay, I tried to be good and wait for someone else to bring it up but I just can't stand it anymore. :) Is no one else excited about this game?

Preview here.

I Am! ;)

UPtimist 04-08-2005 01:33 AM

Sure I am...

But didn't that character use to look way different?

fov 04-08-2005 08:53 AM

Which character? Do you mean Al?

This is a brand new game, not a remake. So they're not basing his appearance on any pre-existing Sierra characters.

Maquisard 04-08-2005 09:59 AM

He might've been thinking about Larry?

Nice preview btw! Looking forward to it. :P

UPtimist 04-08-2005 10:05 AM

Ah, I got mistaken. That just has the excactly same style as Rise of the Hidden Sun... And I was certain the maker of that had posted one of those backgrounds in AGS forums... :P

fov 04-08-2005 10:34 AM

Ah yes... Rattlesnake Jake is quite different from Al. :)

Actually, I'm not looking forwards to this game at all. It doesn't look/sound very interesting to me, and I'm such a big fan of the wild west theme... hypocritical though, I suppose, since I'm looking forwards to Rise of the Hidden Sun.

I keep getting these two games mixed up, especially who's making them and which one's going to be free and which one's going to cost money. Or are they both going to cost money....? Not that I wouldn't buy them, of course.

Al Emmo is going to cost money (but they haven't announced how much, yet). Well worth it, from what I've seen of the game so far. :) As far as I know, Rise of the Hidden Sun is going to be free.

Thanks for the link, Terramax. Good stuff. :)

I have to agree. Nothing I've seen about this game makes me excited. The only reason I'm interested at all is that it's written by Daniel Stacy, who wrote KQ2VGA+. Rise of the Hidden Sun looks far more intesresting.

Isn't everything in the game by the people who did KQ2VGA+? Because if it is, given that this remake is brilliant, then that's plenty enough reason to be expect much.

EDIT: 3000 posts. Gee, I feel old.

Yes, same team, same writer.

Jackal 11-22-2005 08:14 AM

To be fair, this is a game that's quite content to fly under the radar, so there hasn't been all that much to see yet. (Which explains its H-o-M absence, much to Emily's dismay. :D)

Even then, if old-school Sierra nostalgia isn't your idea of excitement, Al Emmo isn't likely to wind you up. But at the very least, with the team behind it, I think we can expect a super-solid game.

I don't know that being a Sierra fan is a prerequisite. It definitely has things in common with the Sierra games of the early 90s (like Freddy Pharkas, GK1 era) but there's a lot for non Sierra-junkies to like, too. At least I think so. Being a Sierra junkie myself, it's hard to know for sure.

Jackal 11-22-2005 08:23 AM

To like, yes. But get excited about ahead of time? Probably not. :)

EDIT: Also, you've seen a whole lot more of the game than the general public. :D

I know. Which is why people should take my word for it. :D

AGA 11-22-2005 10:05 AM

I saw a load of it too, at E3. It looks very promising.

Take BOTH our words for it!

eriq 11-22-2005 12:14 PM

It's going to be fantastic! ;)

apignarb 11-22-2005 04:31 PM

I definately can't wait.

But then again, I am too a former Sierra junkie. Maybe it's just us having withdrawals, and noone else are noticing?

We can expect a super-solid game? Then it has every reason to go in the H-o-M, seeing as most of its challengers can't claim as much :)

Jackal 11-23-2005 06:58 AM

Ah, but it's about hype, I'm afraid. Super-solid is like the safe investment - you can count on it, but it just doesn't get the heart racing. Only the risky bets do that. :D

Example: Al Emmo

#1: Hey, this game is pretty good!
#2: Yeah, not bad. But we knew it would be.
#1. I know. I'm just sayin'.

(Flat, predictable, but positive)

Example: Runaway 2

#1: Oh man, this game stinks as bad as the first game!
#2: You mean rules as much as the first game!
#1: I can't believe I was excited about this turd!
#2: It was everything I hoped for, and more!
#1 and 2: We're going to argue about this game for the next three years, too, aren't we?

See? Hype!

So when is the brand new Solid-o-Meter coming out?

Jackal 11-23-2005 07:08 AM

Whenever I get motivated. But it's just not exciting me. :D

EDIT: In case it got lost in the shuffle, I'm sure Al Emmo hype will increase once it starts getting the word out more (trailers, website, demo, etc.)

Anonymous Game Creator 2 11-28-2005 10:54 PM

As far as hype goes, I think most people have a preconceived notion of what the game is going to be like because it's often compared to Leisure Suit Larry and Freddy Pharkus. However, it doesn't really resemble either game other than on a very superficial level (i.e. You get to flirt with some women, and it's set in the West). But that's like comparing Sex and the City to CSI: NY simply because they're both set in New York.

The game really is unique and the focus is placed more on the central character Al (and his quest at hand), rather than his environment. This will allow him to "transcend" the western setting and go on adventures in completely different places in sequels. Think of it in a similar way to an "Indianna Jones and the (insert setting here)." type of thing.

Granted, we haven't done a whole lot of PR for the game just yet because it's been hectic getting it finished up, but you'll start to hear more in-depth info about the game in coming months. :)

Anyhow, here's a few screenshots which I posted on the AGS forums yesterday:

This is a screengrab from one of the cutscenes:

And here's an example of a dialogue picture. (Note that the in-game lipsynched versions are much smaller):

Also, we'll be commencing beta testing very soon, so anybody who's interested should check our website at www.HimalayaStudios.com when we start taking for applications.

:9~

Thanks for the new screens! :D (I love Al's comb-over...)

Kolzig 11-29-2005 03:58 AM

Wow, those screenshots look really nice. :)
