Default Cruise for a Corpse Review

The ink (?) isn't even dry on this one yet but I had to jump in and praise Evan's review . . . Funniest line in an AG review this year (though the year is less than two weeks old):

"Oh, excuse me, Inspector. I was under the impression that you may want to examine things that don't belong to you when you're TRYING TO SOLVE A MURDER. "

Excellent. Good stuff, Evan!

I'm outraged!! This game is a CLASSIC!! One of the best adventures ever ma...

...

Actually, I've never played it. I was just saving someone else the trouble of complaining.

I must say, though, that the flaws Evan mentioned would have driven me nuts.

I never got to play CfaC for more than a few hours. There were a number of fatal bugs in it that prohibited playing it through. I downloaded an "abandonware" copy years later to see if the same bugs applied, or if I'd just bought a dud copy, but they were still there.

Indiscriminate pan use!

That's not much to go on, Lucien. Care to share what you liked about it, or address the criticism in the review?

I kind of liked it at first. At one point I was looking for something new to do, repeating conversations, wandering around the ship, getting thoroughly fed up. I finally found out (thank God for walkthroughs!) that I had to trigger an event by passing a window from the left. I had passed that window numerous times, coming from the wrong direction. Never bothered to finish the stupid game.

The game's got bugs (fatal ones too), is a little slow, and some of the obstacles that you have to go through isn't very well done.

However, for the story, decent graphics and wonderful music and atmosphere it's worth a play through. Don't agree with the interface being bad, it's efficient and easy to use. Besides, Gabriel Knight 3 have the worst interface ever, and it doesn't stop it from being one of the best adventure games ever.

I love Cruise for a Corpse. And I'm not ashamed to admit it. It's miles better than anything recent too, but then I hate Myst and it's ocean of clones.

Who said the interface was bad? Because it sure wasn't me.

And by the way-- for complimenting the music when you're clearly legally deaf.

Ah, sorry I have different tastes than you then I happen to enjoy the music. Not as much as the music in Monkey Island 2 or Indy Fate of Atlantis, but I think it fits the game quite well at least.

I didn't run and burn the music on a CD - but I thought it suited the game well enough. I liked it, though it has been a while since I played the game. Certainly doesn't make you legally deaf to like it.

Evan heh

Is there such a thing as being illegally deaf? Deaf without a license? Malicious deafness? (Actually, I suspect my wife of that second one. Amazing how often she's not put her hearing aid in when I'm asking her to do something. )

Did anyone get annoying flashing with this game? I have the floppy disk version (there's a cd-rom Delphine compilation) but it flashes so terribly I've never been able to play it.

While all the points of problems that Evan brings up is essentially true, I still like the game behind it for some strange reason. It is unfortunate that the execution is as bad as it is.
