Magna Cum Laude maybe-review-thingie
I mostly agreed with your review, but there are a few things I felt you missed.
There is another collection game aside from the cash and dildo thing, that you might not have noticed. It's rather more challenging too. After finding the first one (outside the frat houses), you can find porn mags on the floor in random places, which makes the fairy godfather (who you meet eventually anyway) appear, and give you loads of cash/dildoes, and some kind of dialogue or song or bonus thing. You also could have made mention of the three possible endings, which I thought was a nice touch. I really enjoyed the conversations you sometimes overhear if you stop and stand near a group of other students, often hilarious and well worth listening. The way your selection (good or bad) in the dialogue mini-game totally affected the way the conversation flowed was another nice touch. I agreed with a lot of your points, but my overall impression was quite different. It's not an adventure game, that much is obvious, but it is a very enjoyable game in its own way, if you can look past its heritage. The humour is kinda coarse and puerile, but hey, that's what kind of game it is...

Glad to see the official title of that article was used here. But others can just use the short version: "thingie"
I didn't know about the porn mag collection, you're right. Wish I had, but it's not enough to make me play it again. The different endings were good, sure, and maybe I should have mentioned it. But the fact that they all played out the same way negated that benefit for me, making it just more repetition. Only the cutscenes were different. I think a lot of people agree on the game's better qualities, but the enjoyment factor is totally determined by your tolerance for the mini-games. For me, it just wasn't enough. Always good to see other opinions, though. |

Well of course it's all a matter of opinion at the end of the day. Oh, and how much of a raving Larry fanboi you are
(I bought Leisure Suit Larry Casino)

I really enjoyed the article. So much that if I ever find myself picking up LSL: MCL out of a bargain bin in a moment of weakness, I will run back to my computer and reread the article again.
It sounds to me like this game followed the typical path of so much of our media today - excessive amounts of very little substance. I miss the old days when we actually had to think. -emily |

Thanks, Emily. The lack of any substance really is the unfortunate thing about this game. I think the developers misunderstood the instructions to "make the game shallow." Storyline, yes; gameplay, no.
AGA, I'd imagine some of the Larry fanbois are MCL's biggest critics. Admit it - you're just a perv. |

Y'know, American Pie (the first one) is one of my favorite movies. Potty humor CAN be combined with a strong story. It's too bad the team behind LSL: MCL couldn't figure out how to do it (or didn't have any intention of doing it in the first place).

To reiterate what I said in the Adventure Gamers + thread, I think this article at the very least, serves to warn people what adventure games are not. To be honest, I find calling it an article instead of a review a bit of a fudge (it's a review in all but scoring) but I still think it serves a valid purpose here. This is NOT an adventure game in the tradition of it's forebears and it's important people know that.

Otherwise, i generally agree with review- good points are humor, dialogs, characters, locations. Bad points: gameplay (can be fun for some time, but it's just too damn repeatative) and it could use a bit more subtlety here and there. I'd say it's worth the bargain bin price. It's mindless fun, but fun nontheless. Last edited by Igor; 11-21-2004 at 01:27 AM. |

Well, now, hang on. MCL is no American Pie by a long shot. For all its porn and pastry, there was a surprising amount of depth to the movie that just plain doesn't exist in the game. The irony is that when the developers dared to compare the two during production, a lot of people reacted like American Pie was the pinnacle of mindless smut, which it wasn't.
Stepurhan, I addressed your point in the other thread, but I'll just touch on it here, too. You're right that we could have called it "Fruit Loops", and it would still essentially be a review. The point of making it a feature article is that it will never be listed in our review list of pure adventure games on AG. Gracias, Becky. Nice to see you around here again. |

I'm kind of wondering why the BeTrapped coverage wasn't also limited to a feature since it is not a pure adventure either?

Too much thread cross-pollination going on. I'll answer this one on the BeTrapped thread.
