Hello,

I'm having issues viewing comments in the Pahelika review: http://www.adventuregamers.com/article/id,1016. I'm using Internet Explorer 7. The comments work in Firefox, and I've managed to make them work once in IE7 (out of three attempts).

What happens is that I'm getting only this line:
Quote:
oerh/a> on May 25, 2009
I'm assuming the username with unusual characters is causing the problem. Can this be fixed somehow?

Thanks.

Some of us are having the same problem. Not even Steve can read the comments on his own article. Being worked on.

(And I guess I should say, if some programming-savvy types have any suggestions, they're all welcomed.)

Switch browsers.

On a more serious note, I'd agree with Shany's assumption on what's going on: It's the "ö" that mess things up. And somewhere along the line, it's already messed up before it reaches the browser: Both Safari (v3 Mac and v4 beta Win) and Opera show the symbol for a missing character.

I also note that under "latest comments", it shows that a comment is made by oerhört, even in IE, so if you can get the username to show the same as in other places of the site, I'm guessing that will fix the problem. (Or you could do a quick-n-dirty fix and strip out all non-English characters from usernames when displaying the comment list.)

Oh yeah, it's (almost) definitely the umlaut causing the problem, and it does seem to be browser-based, but we're having trouble pinpointing a solution. I don't think the character is appearing properly in any browser, but most at least show the comments.

I'd start by comparing the code fetching the username with how it does it elsewhere and find what's different.

I'm sorry for causing a fuss, but the forum never had any problems...

Don't know if these are good hints or inconsequetial but:

The review pages are using "loose" validation:

Quote:
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd">
While the forums are using "transitional"

Quote:
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
And the maybe, just maybe that makes a difference when evaluating the character set (would "loose" ignore and miss a case-sensitive tag? Or the fact that the markup has that "/" and so the whole line is ignored?

I haven't touched the site in ages, so I'm not speaking for sure, but I can pretty much promise you that the website proper isn't xhtml, so it wouldn't be correct to use the xhtml dtd.

The trailing / is part of the XML spec (and therefore the xhtml spec) and means that the tag is self-closing (i.e. has no </meta>). It's not actually required by html4 and doesn't have anything to do with a line being ignored.
