Default King's Quest 4 review / opinions

First off, great review as always Emily. It really captured exactly my thoughts on KQIV, and the theme from the game played through my head the entire time I read it.

So, what does everyone else think of this game? I've always considered it the second part of the great run of King's Quest games (3 through 6 are the only ones I constantly replay, only leaving the first and last two for when I'm in a really completist mood).

I've thought that by casting Rosella as the main character, it really changes the feel of the game. For example, near the end:

Spoiler:
Where Rosella is captured for good by Lolotte, and forced into engagement with her grotesque (On the outside) son Edgar.

That situation never would have happened if the main character was Graham or Alexander.

It never really occurred to me until this playthrough (maybe because I never thought about it as much as I had to in order to write the review!), but I think Rosella as the main character informs the whole tone of the game.

Spoiler:
Stuff like capturing the unicorn and bringing it to Lolotte, kissing the frog to turn it into a prince, helping those ghosts find peace, and literally killing Lolotte with love.

I don't think the love theme would be as pervasive if it had been a male character. I'm really curious to know if this was intentional or not.

Default King's Quest 4 review

Oooh the review was spot on. I love how you've scanned that original ad that appeared in CGW years and years ago!! How cool is that?

King's Quest 4 was really a special game for me. I remember the jump to SCI graphics was so mindblowingly fabulous. And the most important thing about King's Quest 4? You got it.... It was the first Sierra game to use the Roland MT-32 with a full soundtrack composed by William Goldstein. The soundtrack still holds up today. It's breathtaking. I still have the Sierra Soundtrack CD with many of the tracks on it.

I'm so impressed that you touched on ALL of the things that made this game special.

oh! I forgot to post my obligatory Eriq(tm) Sierra art.

Who could forget the classy King's Quest 4 box art and lovely green gold-foiled manual/copy protection? Too bad it didn't have a map. That would have made it super special.

Yeah, great review AND a great game! I've heard of that ad, but never actually seen it! Thanks for bringing it up, Emily

I used to think KQ4 was quite difficult, though.

*sigh* The memories

My first Sierra game, and my favorite of the KQ series. I still remember HUGE chunks of that game... which I'm desperately trying to forget as my KQ compilation is shipped to me... ::slams head on desk::

So why exactly does the picture link to the review on the main page use an image from the original box art design
Spoiler:
where Lolotte steals the talisman from Genesta
instead of the final product with Rosella on the unicorn?

Because I was having a very hard time getting a good 100 pixel by 70 pixel feature pic out of the unicorn one.
