And now I feel really stupid since I can't understand how this multi quote works. I've fiddled a little, but without success.

I think it's just a "up to this point in time" thing. i.e. if someone had just posted as you marked a forum as read that post would be marked as read (even though you hadn't actually read it) but all future posts would still show as unread.
If you mark an entire forum as "read" everything on at that time is marked as "read" whether you have or not. That said, the forum doesn't block you from viewing posts because it thinks you've read them already.

Click the shiny new multiquote button (just to the right of quote) and it will light up orange. Do this on as many posts as you want to quote then hit the quote button on any of them. All highlighted posts are quoted at once.
