How can urine take a test? It's really stupid. It just sort of dribbles away from wherever it lands.

For the most part I don't see the need for name-changing. Jelena had a reasonable cause but most people have anonymous names in the first place. Why go changing? At least (unlike your given name) you got to choose your user name.

I guess I don't quite get why she wants to be more anonymous. She used her first name but she only has vague info in her bio (no city or birthday) so I don't know how easy it would be to 'track her down.' Maybe I'm not devious enough.

No, Stinger's still around. Jack's former name was Singer.

One reason for the name change.

Hmm, I don't remember a poster by the name of Singer.

Well, that'll teach you to disappear from the forums for well over a year.

Yep. Muzzy.

I'm still in the WTF stage over it, myself.

I think if you applied her name with other info about herself she's provided in the forum you could have a reasonable go at tracking her down if you were that way inclined. Maybe it wouldn't be easy but I think you could track down a lot of forumites based on bits and pieces throughout the forums. It's amazing what people let slip without necessarily realising it. You'd probably need to be fairly obsessive to pick up all the available clues though (that said, we are talking about a community whose main purpose is picking up all relevant clues)

At the end of the day I think the key thing is that she feels more comfortable with a more anonymous name. Even if her worries are unfounded it's important for her own peace of mind.

That's all probably true (kinda scary thought, actually), but I don't see how anybody who would be desperate enough to search for possible clues and tidbits in all my posts could be realistically hampered by a less revealing nickname.

I would worry more about identity theft (wherein a birth year or city would be more helpful to a potential thief) than I would worry about a stalker (who I think would be less common). I think that's what was on my mind. But it's all details right now because Jelena ran her old name through the shredder.

How interesting that you're discussing my name change! I don't know whether to be flattered or annoyed.
Step got it just right. I made a mistake by putting my real name on the forum and I didn't feel comfortable with it.
I honestly never worried about being stalked, that was just a silly joke on the Scott questions thread. But I live in a country with only 9 million people. I guess that's about the same population as Los Angelses county. I can't tell you how many times I've discovered that friends from one place know or are related to friends from another place. This is a small country! I'm also a teacher in a small town and therefore I'm well known to a lot of people outside of my circle of friends (parents and students). There's no way of being anonymous where I live.
All this made me feel uncomfortable with my name shining on the forum even without much info in my personal profile.

I probably shouldn't have analyzed your choice to do it. It is a personal decision and if you feel more comfortable than that's what's important.

No worries!
I feel so much better being Jelena, the Russian assassin in leather!
