Signature character limit

I was just wondering what counts towards the character limit. I tried to add a new signature without any formatting that Word said was only 393 characters but the forums still rejected it as being over the 400 limit. What might I still be missing as characters is this sense?

I remember having that problem for some long posts I wrote. I think spaces, carriage returns and formatting are taken into account in the character count. But that's just a guess.

How come images dont work in signatures?

Huz 05-27-2006 12:30 PM

Carriage returns probably count as well.

I think images essentially aren't allowed in sigs because they're annoying.

Not if tastefully done!

Sadly, a large number of people lose all sense of good taste when they're on the Internet.

AG is fortunate to be one of those rare forums with almost none of those people, but the rule's probably a wise one just the same.

Yeah, unfortunately php doesn't have a function to check how tasteful an image is, so they're disallowed.

As for the length issue, I would guess that it just does a strlen() on the string and sees what that returns, so it includes all whitespace characters as well (including \r, \n, \t). You can squeeze a few extras by using a text editor that supports unix style newlines, saving you one byte per line.

So a tastefulness checker is a must for the next generation of web software then. ;)

Did a bit of an edit and it's happy with the length I've got now. See current sig. (only image is a smiley, all of which are automatically tasteful)
