The review screams "Broken Sword 3" and "Fahrenheit" to me... so I'm not really eager to get the game.
Jackal, I'm really curious as to whether you've played The Nomad Soul (Omikron), , and if you have, how you think that Dreamfall compares to it. By the way, I can't seem to remember an Omikron review on AG? If I'm right, then you should consider it, as it was really something revolutionnary for its time.

Although, every review i've seen has been of the great story, no gameplay bent. Which doesn't instill me will loads of confidence.

It's a small world!
While looking at the Quandrary forum this morning, I found post by Jen of Four Fat Chicks commenting upon Gameboomers' reactions to Dreamfall, and giving a link to AG for the Dreamfall review.
Reported by FGM of Mystery Manor. Jackal - I thought you'd get a kick out of this! BTW - I thoroughly enjoyed your review - you always present a fair approach to things, so I feel I can trust what you say. Lynsie

Thanks, FGM. I went and addressed that Quandary thread. This complaint about the controls blows my mind. I can only figure that people aren't properly configuring the game to their liking, because it really doesn't get much easier than Dreamfall. That's not to say that devoted point and clickers won't have a bit of a learning curve, but this notion that it's somehow more awkward or difficult than other 3/P action games is baffling (and I've played what are widely considered to be the best of that type of game). So beats the heck out of me why people are having such trouble, but I sincerely hope the complaints don't mislead people.

For myself, I think it is important to see the comments on the 3 main forums I belong to. GB is the most traditional of the group; and tends to reflect my tastes. AG is the opposite end of the scale, usually what is hyped here doesn't interest me. JA seems to have a balance. It is important to understand the basic biases of these forums and seek out other Adventurer's opinions to have a well rounded idea of what a game is like. It is nice to be loyal to a site, and usually you gravitate to one that you are the most comfortable at; but there is value in being a member at a few different places just to see a wider picture and to have a louder voice too . When new adventure games can set you back $50, doing your homework makes sense.

Oh, I understand that about GB, colpet, having spent plenty of time there myself. My issue is NOT with the many conservative adventure gamers over there. I completely expect them to be hesitant about the game, frustrated in getting the hang of the controls, etc. My issue here is that the control scheme is being slagged by those who are NOT in that boat. If I were a devoted point and clicker, and listened to someone claiming to be an experienced action gamer saying how horrible the control scheme is for THEM, that would scare me off completely. And the way word of mouth works, it doesn't matter if it's true, it only matters if it's said loud enough and often enough. Already it's spreading to another forum, "I heard the controls are terrible". I'm not on a personal crusade to sell this game or anything, but I do like people to get their information correct.

I went back and tried out the mouse+keyboard controls again and I have to say that I don't think they're so bad. I can perfectly move my character around and fighting goes just as easily as with the gamepad. However, that's after I inverted the horizontal axis. I still don't understand why they didn't put that as default. It's very hard to play if you haven't inverted the horizontal axis.

Yeah, the horizontal axes are reversed for the gamepad and keyboard. The default is the natural one for gamepads.

I guess that explains it. I still play with the horizontal axis inverted though, because it just feels more natural to me. I guess that's because I'm not used to playing with a gamepad .

A well intended tangent! No worries, and your point is certainly taken overall.

Hey Jackal, just finished the game, and I really applaud you for the review. I totally agree with every word you mentioned. It's my exact same feelings, put together in a very eloquent manner. Excellent work on the review.

Jackal, while I understand that you're not on a crusade here, you may want to return to Quandary to answer some replies made to your post. And I'm glad you did reply initially to dispel some rumors, ie - game distribution to the Adv game sites. You have a good rep for being fair to all sides and that gives you more respect - you may be able to shake some of the bias.

I think I've since discovered where that myth about review copies might have originated. I am not impressed.
Anyway, I'll keep tabs on that Quandary discussion. I just need to remember where all I've engaged in debates. |
