Keepsake preview

This preview not only made me long for that game to be released in France (beautiful graphics, Myst puzzles, fantasy... :9~), but it also made me smile like a fool.

Great job, Jack (suprisingly ;) ).

Heck, it's just surprising I actually WROTE something again. :P How'd that happen?

I really think people will like this game, provided they go in with the proper expectations.

There was something I wanted to say in the preview, but didn't because I thought it might confuse people. I don't mind confusing you guys, though, so here goes. :D

To me, Keepsake is this year's Return to Mysterious Island. I don't at all mean in terms of gameplay. In that regard they're nothing alike (that's the potentially confusing part). What I mean is both are "modest" games that realize they can't be epic, but succeed admirably in working within a limited design. They're flawed, and they may not even score higher than other games, but they feel more like successful SMALL games than failed BIG ones. You come away feeling it was "surprisingly good" instead of feeling disappointed that it "fell short".

Or something like that.

wonderful preview.

I can't wait to play this. I like the idea of a great "contained" adventure rather than a big-ass failed journey that goes nowhere.

Return to Mysterious Island was really quite fun. And I actually beat it. ;)

Nice preview!

I know what you mean. I'm really looking forward to this game, and may actually play it sooner than later :) .

I've been thinking that (maybe) 3rd person point of view might be the best way to enjoy Myst-style puzzles...

I'm not so sure about it.
Myst games implies exploration, and exploration in 3rd person games can be tedious, because you have to wait for the avatar to move.

RLacey 01-30-2006 03:04 PM

Nonsense. As we all know, there is no way to enjoy Myst-style puzzles ;).

I think this is certainly true for people who strongly prefer 3/P games. Just to clarify, though, the puzzles in Keepsake switch to 1/P perspective to solve. But that's just natural.

I hope i'll get a postive surprize when i play the full game in english,
cause the german demo turned me off this game, if not big time, then surely a great deal..

Did you hear that, Mr. Lacey? :)

Yeah, that just the natural superiority of the 1st-person perspective...

That was a good preview. It looks like a really appealing game. Given that it's a fantasy adventure game, I like the fact that you travel with a magical animal companion.

Interesting

When I started playing the demo (in German, and my German is not very good!) I thought: ``Hmm, it's just walking around and solving stupid puzzles,'' but later on I found out that there's more to this game than just that. I will certainly play it just to find out how `deep' this game is.

Jackal 02-03-2006 07:04 AM

Hmm, I don't know if "deep" is a word I'd use to describe Keepsake. The entire game is largely walking around and solving puzzles. :P The question is whether or not that works in a particular game. And in Keepsake, I think it does. As I said in the preview, I think it's because they kept their design simple and everything works within its own consistent framework. :)
