Default Question About Legality of Posting Articles

Are we allowed to post articles from magazines or would that be breaking some kind of copyright law?

The magazines don't like it, and yes, it's probably a breach of copyright (though it might just be allowed to copy a single article from a magazine under fair use of copyright for personal use).

Essentially, you're welcome to post quotations, but reprinting the whole article is a no-no.

From AG's FAQ:

Quote:
Am I allowed to post magazine scans on the forums?
You can post scans of really old magazines, but not of recent issues. Magazines generally don't like it when scans of their copyrighted material are posted on the internet.

There's unlikely to be a legal exception, but the magazines are less likely to care as it becomes less hurtful to their sales (yes, there are back issues, but they don't bring in the same amount of cash).

Yes, they are. And if we wanted to be real bitches about it, we could say not to scan "really old articles," too. But sometimes it's nice to let people use their own judgement rather coming up with all the answers ourselves.

How old is the article?

To me, "really old" means nostalgia type stuff... articles from old InterAction magazines, things like that. Any article on a recent game is probably not a good idea to scan, though.

The latest issue of OXM. What about an excerpt?

Way too recent.

I'd say it's okay to type up a (brief) excerpt, as long as the magazine is credited, but that's about it. I take it the article isn't already available online?

If you find Epic Games' Cliff Bleszinski interviewing Double Fine Productions' Tim Schafer interesting, then yes.
