Default "New" posts in thread

Sometimes (and it's happening today to me), a thread that hasn't been posted in for awhile will pop up as having a new post even though nothing has happened to the thread. It's not that big of a deal to me (they're easily marked as read), I was just curious as to why it happens.

Those are usually Poll threads. Someone voting = thread popping up.

This is the bane of my existence. It even changes the time setting for the last post when browsing the forum, so that I can end up viewing topics with no new posts for days .
