Default The overlap of interactivity and noninteractivity

Are you afraid that with noninteractive dramas so highly developed already, there is not sufficient reason for the interactive drama to exist? In other words, what do interactive dramas have to offer that traditional dramas do not? Will a story ever be better in an interactive framework than in a noninteractive framework, when a single-path story can be given more focus from the storyteller?

Good question.

Interactivity offers many unique elements : a unique sense of immersion in the world and the story is my number one. When you can participate to the narrative and help the characters with their decisions, you empathize with them. Once you care for them, you will share their emotions in a much powerful way. Indigo Prophecy is just the beginning of this, it is not even 5% of what can be achieved in matter of identification with the characters, and I still think it is a very different experience from cinema.

Immersion is also reinforced by the fact that you actually participate to the storytelling by deciding where you want the story to go. The player makes the story (or at least has the illusion to do so), which is a very unique feeling.

Again, see Indigo Prophecy has the first very small step in this very exciting new direction. There is a lot left to invent, but to me Indigo demonstrates that it is possible and interesting.

Imagine if at the beginning of the game, you could make Lucas go absolutely crazy. Instead of hiding the knife, he could pick it up again, run over to the police officer and stab him in the back, take his gun and shoot up the diner and the "homeless" man in order to leave 0 witnesses. Aaah...the possibilities...
