Default Discovery is in orbit!

A bit of good news. The space shuttle program is finally back on track as Discovery safely got 7 astronauts into orbit.

Am I the only who's got a big smile on his/her face looking at the pictures? I can't wait to get home so that I can see the video of the lift off.

I saw the lauch on TV, and it was impressive as always. Even though they've been doing this for years.

Excellent, but getting it up wasn't the problem.

I'll be happy when they gat back safely.

Mind you they should have mothballed the Shuttle and developed a viable replacement years ago. Still stuck with an outdated launch system is just plain mad.

Too true! I don't think I'd be comfortable going into space in the finest technology the 1970s had to offer. Yes, it's been refined a bit over the years, but the original prototype (the Enterprise) was finalized and in service as a mobile test bed as far back as 1980.
However I do find it perfectly fitting that the US's primary space vehicle is, in concept anyway, a giant flying pickup truck.

Accroding to this mornings news it's a giant pick up truck that's missing a couple of bits

Hopefully nothing vital or the next time America puts a man in space my GREAT GREAT grandkids will be attending virtul-school.

Get to your TV or go to www.nasa.gov to see the space walk to repair the gap filler happening right now. Fascinating stuff!

What a fascinating thing to see that was! The repair was a complete success.

Still keeping my fingers crossed until they touch down though.

To be fair, it's not as though the physics of space travel have changed since 1980.
