Just saw O Diabo a Quatro, a Brazilian comedy. Pretty good stuff, and very funny at times. If you ever catch this on TV or in cinemas, go see it. Has some of the same actors as Cidade de Deus, but it's not nearly as 'dark'.

Mary Reilly (1996, John Malkovich, Julia Roberts)

A nice reimagining of Jekyll/Hyde out of a fresh perspective - that of Jekyll's housemaid Mary Reilly - but understandably not a tale for everyone. Rather disturbing unless you're pinkgothic who ticks like Hyde anyway...

I love it.

1996? Wow, that's crazy. I remember very well when I saw that at theaters...makes me feel old.

Loved that film too, caught in on TV a couple of weeks ago. Dark and disturbing ones are the best , well, most of the time anyway.

Just saw Delicatessen on DVD, holy cow what a fantastic movie! Exactly the type of humour so sadly absent in modern comedies, dark and gritty, and visually stunning

Directed by Marc Caro (La Cite des Enfants Perdu) and Jean-Pierre Jeunet (known for La Cite as well, in addition to Le Fabuleux destin d'Amelie Poulain, Alien: Resurrection and best of all Un long dimanche de fiançalles) this is probably one of the best French movies I have ever seen, if not the best. It's also quite possibly the most absurdistic film I've come across. I'm completely in love with this film, I'm going to try and find the DVD (rented this one) and buy a hundred copies!

Anyone else seen this film?

Please, please tell me that you pointed out that the Montgolfier brothers were flying hot-air balloons over France more than a century earlier.

There is, after all, a fine line between good-natured xenophobia and bigotry.

As far as film, I'm sorry to say that I can't recommend anything. I have seen some movies recently, but they were all terrible. I've only recently begun posting here, and it is far too soon to be known as the one who sent everyone out in search of cinematic emetics.

The Wright brothers are overrated Brazilians did it first!

"good natured xenophobia"? For some reason, that just sounds weird

I enjoyed Big Mommas House 2, it was a great film, much better than the first one. I'll be sure to grab it on dvd, too.

Me too. Picked it up recently, and I haven't actually watched it yet. And as I almost *never* buy DVDs of the movies I hadn't seen at least once, this should say something about how much I loved Amelie, Un long dimanche de fiançalles and City of the Lost Children.

The opening scene, where the guy tries to hide in the bin, that guy is named "Tried to Escape" on IMDB And I just love the scene with the violin saw, where the whole building is making noise in harmony, OMG that is sheer utter brilliance

Don't hesitate, just buy it! This is one of those purchases you'll be watching over and over again (as opposed to the tens of DVDs I own but only seen once and don't intend on seeing again )

According to IMDB, it's the 53rd worst film ever But IMDB has been wrong before.

All wonderful films, except La Cite felt a bit forced, or overdone.

Saw House Of 1000 Corpses, and then afterwards The Devils Rejects (House of 1000 corpses sequal) They were a bit sick, but I liked them though, Rob Zombies got a special kind of humour..

Gotta check them out some time. So they're funny and not just really gruesome?

What I mean by good neatured xenophobia is joking at another people's expense, but clearly in a manner that is not malicious, and certainly with th implicit understanding that there is no real intolerance or prejudice behind the joke. Instead, the target of the joke is the prejudice itself, or individuals who believe that stereotypes are real.

The best-known example I can think of was the episode of Fawlty Towers in which Basil suffers a head injury from a falling moose head and quite badly mistreats a group of German tourists.
