I mentioned Raging Bull!

Oh wait... Ha ha. I see... Let me rephrase...

"The Departed isn't half the film that Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, or even Casino were..."

I agree that he'll get the Oscar for this, even though Clint Eastwood or Guillermo Del Toro probably deserve it.

I admit I may be a little biased, though, because I find Martin Scorsese even at his best slightly (not terribly) overrated. For example, Taxi Driver, while I appreciate its great acting or camera work, never made me feel like I've been even close to "inside" the character's psyche, like many reviewers felt.

Completely off-topic, you've just made 2001st post in the Movies thread. No Kubrick reference?

You're probably right, AFGNCAAP. Scorsese will finally get his due, ironically for a movie I would consider entertaining but fluffy. What a message the Academy sends to directors!

I'm holding out for 2010.

The Bourne Identity - a good action thriller.

I didn't notice any homophobe or sexist tendencies in this movie at all when watching it, so I think you're seriously exaggerating or at least being overly sensitive to it.

Thanks, Phantom! I'll let my shrink know I'm completely wrong about my perception of myself. Thank goodness I have you, who barely talks to me or knows me, to correct me on such garish flaws.

Sarcasm aside - the response is: No, I'm neither seriously exaggerating it, or being overly sensitive to it. I wish I was.

The only thing I can think of is that the German synchronisation is badly done, to the point of stressing things that were, in the original language, not the point. I doubt that, personally.

Training Day

Didn't think it would be any good (usually I can hardly stand Denzel Washington), but it's really excellent.

Face/Off

I only saw it by chance, I was flicking through Sky Movies and thought "what the heck."

It was quite fun and better than expected.

Children of Men - got nothing else to say but that this movie is indeed as amazing as you've been hearing. I don't normally agree with critics but this is one movie that shows Cuaron is indeed one of the best visual directors out there. Every frame is packed with information (not to mention some of the incredibly choreographed shots) and sometimes it can be a little overwhelming. The premise is a little silly and some actions of some characters seem unnecessary [SPOILER] mainly those actions that seem inserted in because every character has to die in a movie like this. But I didn't find it interesting as a sci-fi movie; I think this is one of the few movies made in recent years that provoked my thinking simply with its compositions and shots. Cuaron is officially a director I'll be watching now.

I hate to say shit like this, but anyone that likes Half-Life 2 might appreciate the setting - very City 17-ish, even down to the ambiguity of location.

It's one of my least favorites. I don't like Cage's acting, and in this you have another person trying to act like him. I also don't like how John Woo does things. I can barely get through the whole movie.

I've heard a couple others liken it to Half-life, so I think I'll be checking it out.

Dr. Strangelove - a very good movie, the quality I'd expect from Kubrick.

The DVD case said it was widescreen, but it actually was 4:3. Did I end up with a wrong DVD or is that how it's supposed to be?

BRICK - cute film, very 21 jumpstreet. I had a bad case of 'oh its he/she from that tv show' though which threw me more than the lingo. Liked the 50s fashions.

Taxi Driver was well done, but it wasn't my kind of movie. That's basically how any Scorcese movie is for me. His subject choices don't do it for me.

Philadelphia

I'm not quite sure what to think of this one. On the one hand it's a shamelessly manipulative film with a conclusion that you can see coming from the very beginning. At the same time, I thought it was worth watching.

Children of Men - it was pretty good. Not much more to say since it didn't really evoke anything in me.
