The Scott Question Thread

This thread is entirely devoted to asking Scott questions, inspired by another thread where someone wanted to ask him something. Scott knows an awful lot of cool stuff, so it's up to us to learn from him! All in the name of fun (no pressure for serious answers)!

So, I'll begin -

O great and wise Thrift Store Scott, is there a god?

Fairygdmther 07-07-2005 11:33 PM

Okay, so we're going for the easy questions, huh? Let's see - what's the meaning of life?

O Great Scott... There's this girl at work I sorta like. I was wondering if she likes me too.

That's not worded like a question.

O great and wise Thrift Store Scott, is there a god?

Y'all are not gonna rest until I laugh so hard I pee on myself tonight, are you?

Okay, "Is there a God":
(I vacillate between atheism, agnosticism, and Buddhism, so my opinions are just that- my opinions.)
In the "created the world in seven actual days" sense, no.
In finding wonder and astonishment in the marvelous complexity and interdependency of both the macrocosm and microcosm of the universe, yes. Every time mankind has been so arrogant as to think they knew all there was to know, some wank has had the unmitigated gall to discover entirely new worlds whose very existance was never suspected up to that point, thereby condemning the dusty, hallowed halls of academia to a perpetual game of "catch-up". Dogmatic organized religion is playing the same game for the same reason, but it isn't scoring nearly as well.
We as humans crave order and seek to impose patterns of order on a random, chaotic universe. We as humans crave explanations and when none are forthcoming we submit our own fantastic guesses. When we learn to say not "This is how it is now and for all time" but "This is how it appears to be, but that might change at any moment", then we might have a clue as to the nature and existance of God.
Or not. We'll see.

Live every moment as if it were your last:
Don't waste time with people you don't like, but try to find something to like in everyone.
No matter where you go, there you are. Don't bring the whole room down because you don't want to be there. Give an unsolicited compliment, ask a polite question, strike up a conversation, really listen to responses, learn something you didn't know, and make a new friend.
Never hesitate to tell the people you love how much you love them, and why.
Life is nothing but a series of moments, and you have the chance to make each and every one as pleasant or unpleasant as you choose. Choose well, because one of those moments will be your last.

Talk to her. Not "chat her up" talk to her, but talk to her as if you are genuinely interested in her opinions and experiences, which you should be if you really like her. Ask her polite questions, and really listen to her responses, then ask her more questions about her responses. Do not volunteer any information about yourself (except your name, of course) unless she specifically asks for it, and after answering ask her the same question in turn.
If she likes you at all, she will be flattered by the attention and will respond favorably. If she tells you to get lost or ignores you, then she clearly doesn't like you. If she answers you curtly then she's undecided about you, so thank her for her response and don't ask her another question for at least 24 hours.

Nonetheless, I got your drift.

The response that has served me best to that question is "Why not?"
Why get out of bed? Why not?
Why stop and smell a beautiful flower? Why not?
Why go to work? Why not?
Why taste an exotic food? Why not?
"Why not?" isn't an answer unto itself, but it encourages comparisons and critical thinking. You are forced to weigh the pros and cons of any decision, and to see which way the scales tilt. "Why not" can also give you permission to try new experiences you might not normally consider, which can open up whole vistas of unexpected opportunity.
Why? Why not?

Okay, all this attention is extremely flattering, but I can only think so much at one time.
Thank you all very much for posting to this thread that Squarejaw so graciously started, and special thanks to Squarejaw for putting the spotlight on me when I least expected it.
I owe you one for this, Squarejaw.

:D You want me to close this thread?

squarejawhero 07-08-2005 03:36 AM

Nivvah!

@Scott - those are some impressive answers... but riddle me this...

Why does it always rain on me? Is it because I lied when I was 17?

samIamsad 07-08-2005 03:58 AM

I've witnessed the second coming! :9~ Impressive. Darn impressive...
So... am I allowed to ask some questions, my Lord? :)

Ice T or ice tea?
Banana shake or Banana Joe?
Headbanging or stagediving?
Point&click or rock and roll?
Money, money, money or girls, girls, girls?

You got that the wrong way round.

Money,Money,Money = Girls,girls,girls

Girls,Girls,Girls = Skint,skint,skint

SakSquash 07-08-2005 06:34 AM
