London Explosions
I'm OK - scrugates, nuttygal - you alright? Any other AG'ers from London OK?
Luckily I didn't go into work today. I wouldn't have been effected too much, but I'm glad I changed my project hand-in date to Friday. |
Looks like terrorist attacks in lieu of the G8 summit. I haven't been able to contact my ex who's working in London to see if she's OK, but she was away from the areas affected.
London is locked down. 3 buses destroyed and multiple underground explosions. |
Hotdamn. I'm seeing it on German television now.
|
My guess this isn't the last. I hope they are, but the timing of one after the other seems scary.

F**king terrorists
I hope all the Londoners are ok. Heard of at least 6 explosions so far. No numbers on Casulties as yet. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4659093.stm |
My ex was in the middle of it. Thankfully she's fine - on the central line no less, and 5 mins ago sitting on a bus whilst I spoke to her! Crazy.
|
I see that the BBC are already blaming Al Queyada (sp??)

At least she is OK. |
RE Al Qaeda I think it's a bit early to start pointing fingers, but I saw that too. It's probably more likely western terrorists taking advantage of the security services around the G8. Hopefully it's not diversion for something big your way.

It's an obvious target, but they're moving the security specialists from the G8 down here.

Blair appeared on television just now.
"Our commitment to protecting our way of life is greater than the terrorist determination to cause death and destruction." It was extremely heartfelt, he looked very, very close to tears and stunningly shocked. It was obvious he was talking from the top of his head by the thought he was putting into the speech. Considering he fears this kind of thing, looking at him it felt like if the guys who did it were in the same room he'd tear them apart with his bare hands. |
What I find striking is that it's a few days after the Make Poverty History march in Edinburgh. Two contrasting methods of making a point. To me, this highlights how stupid terrorist attacks really are: It doesn't acheive anything except to harden the resolve of your adversary.
Gandhi understood this, so why is it beyond these people? |
I just got up... :(

Living in Edinburgh i've seen the contrasting methods first hand. Luckily nothing on the scale of what has happened in London, but it is clear that terrorism doesn't work all that well. It just resolves the people attacked to attack back. Just ask the Japanese after the surprise attack at Pearl Harbour where they "woke a sleeping Giant" in the US. |
Yeah, I just got up too. My heart is with you guys. Stay safe.
|
I suppose I should also mention what a reminder this is of just how self-centred we are. Apart from the politicians, of course, they're so self-centred they never realise it. Many foreign countries and organisations have sound reason to hate us, but are we doing anything about it? Are we, heck!

As tempsie said, leave that debate to another thread.

But yes most countries have pissed off others at some point or other. You can't please everyone all the time. Not an excuse for this kind of action though. Damn cowards. |
