Most emotional song ever?
In the vein of the "To be moved is to be human" thread, which seems to be concentrating mainly on life experieces and literary examples, I was wondering which songs have emotional impact i.e give good or bad memories?
I'll start the ball rolling with a few of my most emotionally captivating songs. "Hurt" by NIN or Johnny Cash "I Ain't Missing You" by John Waite "Hallelujah" by Jeff Buckley "Pink" by Aerosmith "Do You Remember the First Time?" by Pulp All of these songs have some emotional relevance to me, not all of them good |

Homeward Bound - Simon and Garfunkel
Seasons in the Sun - Terry Jacks Both bring back ancient memories from my youth - I'm transported back to that time and place when I hear them.

I have no idea how this is, but the most moving songs in my life have somehow found me during the times I most needed them, like suddenly finding a stray kitten in the park when you're aimlessly wandering in your depression.
Interestingly, I first heard this song from Dido (my sig) recently. I cried. It's a f#&king confirmation of my life - poignantly autobiographical, too close to home. And you all know me - Fairygdmther, Wormsie, Soccsie, everyone. Know this song, and you'll know me. Life For Rent written & performed by Dido I haven't really ever found a place that I call home I never stick around quite long enough to make it I apologize that once again I'm not in love But it's not as if I mind that your heart ain't exactly breaking It's just a thought, only a thought But if my life is for rent and I don't learn to buy Well I deserve nothing more than I get Cos nothing I have is truly mine I've always thought that I would love to live by the sea To travel the world alone and live my life more simply I have no idea what's happened to that dream Cos there's really nothing left here to stop me It's just a thought, only a thought But if my life is for rent and I don't learn to buy Well I deserve nothing more than I get Cos nothing I have is truly mine While my heart is a shield and I won't let it down While I am so afraid to fail so I won't even try Well how can I say I'm alive If my life is for rent... There's a video at her site of this song in full, if anyone's interested.

Well, I suppose someone has to say 'Mad World' by Michael Andrews...
Also, I suppose it's not excactly a "song", but Bach's 'Air'... It's just got that something (there are other reasons too)... And there's maybe more, but how could I remember them? Hmm... 'Can't touch this' by MC Hammer (no, not really). Last edited by UPtimist; 06-30-2005 at 12:57 AM. |

Man, there a bunch of emotional songs...
I'd say anything by Leonard Cohen (the Partisan being one that springs to mind, for obvious reasons), or by some french speaking singers that you probably don't know (Jacques Brel or Barbara) can break my heart. Simon and Garfunkel songs are quite strong too... Also, there are some odd songs like the Nick Cave/Kylie Minogue duo, or Radiohead's Creep. Or Runaway Train, or... damn, that's it, I'm depressed.

I immmediately think of Janis Joplin's Piece of My Heart, both her version and Melissa Etheridge's. Others that come to mind - Live's Lightning Crashes , U2's Bad and Pearl Jam's Better Man.

The emotional significance I associate with certain songs is more about what was happening in my life at the time, rather than the song itself. In most cases the music would be meaningless to anyone else.
