Default Pirates of the Carribean (possibly some spoilers)

2 weeks ago I went to see Pirates and I must say I am very satisfied. The acting was top-notch, especcially Jhonny Depp's. The story was amusing and thrilling, and the script was wonderful. I'm posting this to hear more opinins.
Also, is it just me, or were there very few MI references? The only real one I could find was the skelton army, because I was too absorbed in the film to look for them. What did I miss?

I thought it was great! Really brought me back to my pirate days as a wee laddie. Other MI paralells I could spot were the fat and thin skeleton pirates, the whole "Undead Ghost Pirate" thing, Orlando Blooms Guybrushy clothes (and looks...)... I'm sure there was more... And why did LEC never think of using a Ghost Monkey??? I mean, it's obvious!

I think there's a good chance Johnny Depp could be nominated for an Oscar for his role. I hope he does, it's been one of the best performance so far of the year

I saw this movie 3 times already and only one thing can explain why. It was awesome

Sure it wasn't your average sentimental oscar-type movie, but it was probably the best movie I've seen in 2003. I felt it had a good story, relatively good acting and enjoyable execution.

I haven't had this much fun at a movie in a LONG time.

I went to see it last friday. It was an excellent movie!

I was just amazed of Johnny Depp's perfect acting once again.

Only couple of one-liners didn't hit the spot, everything else was great.

The music was a bit un-creative. Although it was very good, and powerful.

But still seven songs used the same kind of melody. I know, because I have the soundtrack.

Yeah now that I think of it Bloom does look Guybrushy
Also the whole formula, the curse, the love interest, the villain, the crew, all very connected. There was a point where I was refferring to Orlando Bloom's character as Guybrush, to the point that I don't remember the caharacter's real name . I remember Jack Sparrow though, because of how he said the name especcially I can't get over how funny and how splendidly he acted.

And Depp should definetly win the oscar, or at least be nominated. Pirates will probably be nominated for visual effects aswell.

Tyler: I waited a while for it aswell, you're in for a treat in November, so don't worry

I really is an amazing film, the best blockbuster Hollywood has produced in the last few years. Depp was sublime, Bloom solidified his chance at being a big Hollywood star and Geoffrey rush was just the perfect villain. And I'm glad the audience has supported this movie: it has already earned more money than Matrix Reloaded at the box office! 8-) Take that Neo!

The best film Ive seen this year.. For once something that really lived up to the hype. The film just kept on giving, getting better and being soo long! Johnny Depp is amazing, his performance was faultess and completely utterly different (in style not quality) to his usual acting.

Good script, good plot, brilliant acting, bags of style and pure fun. This is how hollywood blockbusters should be but never are!!

I thought the film was a lot of fun and the special effects were pretty neat, especially the skeleton army

It is great to see so many Johnny Depp fans here - I too thought his performance was outstanding, and it proves to show that he hasn't been typecast.

[blatant advertisement] In fact, I think him a such a versatile and skilled actor, with such depth, range and perception, that he should be given the opportunity to tackle another, very important role. Feel free to sign my petition http://www.PetitionOnline.com/jd4sb/petition.html and support a very worthy cause! [/blatant advertisment]

Oh, Clarice! Will you stop with that nonsense?! Gary Oldman looks great as Sirus Black. You had a bias against him before even seeing him in the movie, and you know it. And that press-photo, yeah, it didn't look good, but the one from the movie does.

Oh, and so not to entirely hi-jack this thread. Pirates of the Caribbean was great! And I have nothing to add that hasn't been said before. Well, I thought Geoffrey Rush was great, too.

Well, I signed the petition just for fun, since it won't make any difference, though I haven't seen the actor who will play Sirius yet. I do agree that Depp's acting made me think of Black for some reason. In any case, whatever they choose is fine with me since I prefer the books anyway.

bigjko: Sirius looks pretty nice to in the pic, though I imagined him to be more wild looking. Other than that though, pretty spot-on. Depp doesn't look at all like I would imgaine Black, it's his acting that made me think of it.

Rfol! I like sgiinng petiniots, though I don't use a consistent name

And not to get this off topic, Rush was also great, and the role of Elaine, err what was her name? was done well too, IMO.

The visual effects were splendid, with the skelteons most noticeably of course.

And how could I forget the sword fighting?

The only thing that bothered me about the film was its blatant Foreshadowing Syndrome. I mean, HOW many times in the movie did a character do or say someting that got a different application later in the film???? Just off the top of my head, there's the whole "parley" thing, the "He's the worst pirate I've ever seen", the apple, the glass eye, Orlando Bloom throwing the sword into the door, the corset, the "It's more of a guidline"...... I'm sure there's a lot more things like this. I guess they put it in because it was so long, and they wanted people who are easily amused to feel awarded for paying attention (And yes, I laughed at quite a few of them myself).

I think those little hints, if used sparingly, can be indeed amusing and make for the illusion of a well-thought plot. Most of them were rather obvious, I have to admit though.
I voted 'nice'. I did really enjoy the movie, but three weeks after (being now), I'm not really giddy about it anymore. I was also somewhat disappointed with it, but I don't exactly know why. For me, the movie never really hit the spot, neither in scenery, nor in terms of plot or dialogue.

Spoiler:
Best scene in the movie was when Jack was rowing back to the pirate's cavern with a huge satisfied smile on his face. That, and Barbossa's wonderful line ,,I feel... cold.". Of course, the entire crowd in the cinema thought it was meant as a joke and laughed out loud. I think I was the only one who was chilled because of its beauty.

Garyos: I guess I'm easily amused, cause it didn't bother me and I luaghed aswell. But the witty remarks and Jack's behaviour were the funniest things. Orlando was supposed to be the lead actor, but I don't even remember the name of his character, because Depp absolutely conquered the screen whenever he appeared

(But "This is the day you'll remember as the day you almost caught captain Jack Sparrow" was a bit overdone. But the way it was done in the ending made it funny as hell )

About Rush's line, I didn't think it was a joke, it was quite moving, how he can now feel things, and at the same time we know what's gonna happen next. I almost felt sorry for him. He acted this line in particular very well.
