That's what I've been told. Okay, the younger crowd consists of Bayern supporters, but the old sods... Heck, even Edmund Stoiber (Bavaria's minister president) is a Sechz'ger. 1860 was the first club from Munich to play in the Bundesliga when it was founded in 1963, Bayern promoted one year later and gained popularity in the 70s. Just found this one: http://forums.soccerfansnetwork.com/...ad.php?t=27454 I think it's pretty much the same as with AC Turin and Juventus, for example. Turin, now in the upper echelon of Italy's Serie B, historically has represented the local working class versus a nationwide base of support for Juventus, the bianconeri. (http://www.theglobalgame.com/gleanita.htm) The game today? 2-0. Two goals by Mehmet Scholl.

In saying that, of the two teams from my hometown of Birmingham, Aston Villa and Birmingham City, Villa are the better supported in terms of numbers (I'm one of them) as they are the older and vastly more successful historically, but the "Blues" fans are just as loyal in their (not much) smaller numbers. Birmingham is an Industrialized city (albeit a shrinking Industrialized city) and my Dad, who spent nearly all his working life in factories, would probably agree that there were more Blues fans working in these than Villa. But then it is area based too, as the Blues and Villa stadiums have always been located in different areas of the city. Birmingham City were originally called Small Heath, which is a small, fairly rundown area of the city. Villa on the other hand had their stadium built facing the old stately home, Aston Hall, in what was then considered a more middle-class area of the city (not so much now though). One big difference I do notice though between the two Birmingham teams and the two Munich teams is the fans of the Munich teams (with a few exceptions of course) have no problem getting behind either team when it's a big game. On the other hand, the Blues and Villa fans love to hate each for the main part and can't hide their excitement when the other team loses. There is no stranger sound than a group of Blues fans at a game against say Newcastle singing "Shit on the Villa". Even stranger when they used to do it whilst playing in a completely different division.

Curt, have you been at the Allianz Arena yesterday (I wasn't, Munich is quite a few kilometres away from here...)? Funny game (Bayern 4, Germany 2 ).

Finland - Holland game is starting right about now.
It's full house at the Olympic Stadium at Helsinki, 35000 spectators.

Finland had a great pressure through the whole first half, but Holland had only one real shot on goal, and Ruud Van Nistelrooy did not miss that chance...
So the score 0-1 at half time.

Korea's in. Just beat Kuwait 4-0. See you in Germany!
Korea beat European power houses like Portugal, Spain, and Italy and made it into the semi finals in last World cup before bowing out to Germany. Can't wait to see how well they will do in Gemrmany. |

Looks a superb stadium. I did see some of the Bayern v Deutschland game and the first goal was decidedly easy if you ask me, almost as if Bayern were meant to score the first goal for all the fans there. Oops - Russia have just equalized. 2-2 Highlight of the month so far though has to be Sarah Connors rendition of the German National Anthem. Oh boy, what a cock-up. The radio stations have really been taking the piss out of her this week. That's what you get when you try to Americanize the national sport - serves them right.

Gah, that long-pass playing style of Finland was quite annoying. Why does their team even have midfielders, I wonder? The game wasn't spectacular, but I'm glad we scored 4 times.

Oh well, our coach is going to get sacked very soon, I don't even have a clue who is going to replace him.

But he himself has said that he will continue playing football, I think he wants to help Finland to go to 2008 European Championship Tournament.
