It was Eddie Vedder from Pearl Jam. They used to even tour occasionally with Neil Young.

And, indeed, they also made an album with him — Mirrorball — for which they were uncredited due to contractual issues. It's not worth going out of your way for, but "I'm The Ocean" is one of Young's best latter-day songs. Also, his 1994 album, Sleeps With Angels, which I haven't heard, was apparently written about that overrated hack. Er, I mean Kurt Cobain. Perhaps that explains "Piece Of Crap".
