With Time Out being the obvious choice, topping his oeuvre in both critical and commercial stakes and providing an overexposed 'in' for the uninitiated in the shape of Paul Desmond's "Take Five", a number no ear, I'm sure, has escaped.

I'm no big jazz expert or anything, but here are some jazz things that I like:

I like Duke Ellington, but that's jazz of a different variety than those you listed.

For yet another style, how about Chick Corea? I can really recommend the CD he made together with Bobby McFerrin.

Jan Johansson is another jazz pianist who made an album that's world famous in Sweden, "Jazz på svenska" (Jazz in Swedish). There he plays old Swedish traditional music in a jazz way. Really good, but I don't know how easy it would be to get outside of Sweden.

That's a bunch of pianists. How about some bassoon? Paul Hanson is a really good jazz bassoonist, and he's not just good for a jazz bassoonist (they're not that many). You can compare him to sax players, and he's still great.

Or maybe the Modern Jazz Tuba Project for another unusual instrument?

And Béla Fleck! He plays the banjo. Béla Fleck and the Flecktones is one of those groups that's not easily classified, but if you think "jazz meets bluegrass" then you may be in the general area.

I'll finish this post with something more normal: Al Jarreau. A good vocalist. Not hardcore jazz, but he's certainly got that swing.

Do that - they're good. The CD I have is called "favorite things". It contains songs like "My Favorite Things" (Rogers/Hammerstein), "Georgia on My Mind" (Carmichael), "Pick Up the Pieces" (Duncan/Ball/McIntyre/Gorrie/Stuart/McIntosh) and "Sing, Sing, Sing" (Prima) along with original songs. The group consists of three euphoniums, three tubas (CC, F and Eb) and a rhythm section (git, pi, bass, drums).

I very much like Alice Coltrane, especially her collection of live recordings called Transfiguration. Awesome piano jazz.

I second that mention. I'm not schooled nearly enough in this field, or even his, but he'd be my favourite jazz artist if gun-pressed.

I knew that didn't sound quite right. It's Birth Of The Cool, not Birth Of The Blue.

I'm listening to Dave Brubek's "Time Out" and Herbie Hancock's "Maiden Voyage" (not at the same time, however) and liking both. So many artists to try out!

Cliff Richard - 21st Century Christmas

This is so corny and yet so catchy. Will get find himself with that sixth decade number one?
