On a serious note again, and considering the S&M themes in The Downward Spiral you should listen to his earlier album Pretty Hate Machine

- this is a fantastic album to listen to if you're in the right mood - I have to say that I'm not gay, but the picture of Trent Reznor in the inlay is one of the sexiest male pics I have ever seen

So, what's CD of Nine Inch Nails (if any) would you recommend to a newbie?

I've just begun listening to Blondie's No Exit.
Did I mention that it's one of my favorite band?
I saw them live last year, and even though she's somewhere close to 60 years old, Deborah Harry was jumping around and singing like a madwoman.
In other words, it was awesome. And the drummer is the coolest I've ever seen (but I haven't seen a lot). He seemed to be giving everything he has for the entire length of the concert.

Ninth- Either of the two Nine Inch Nails albums mentioned by Manhunter are excellent, particularly when listened to through headphones.
Considering his recommendation about the photo inside "Pretty Hate Machine", I'll be picking that one up myself soon.

But does excellent means "accessible for newbies"?

I would say so, yes. Trent Reznor demonstrates talented musicianship mixed with fantastic and highly creative samples and astonishing studio effects, often using non-musical sounds to carry the rhythm or bass lines.
The subject matter of his music is something we can all relate to, either by personal experience or fantasy, although many of us might not care to admit that.
I suggested listening to his music through headphones so that you can get the full effect of the layer upon layer of sound to be heard in each Nine Inch Nails song.

Hard to say, but if you want an album full of emotional songs and lyrics, then it would have to be Pretty Hate Machine

This is a very melodic album and if you're not into the hard industrial sound associated with NIN then I would say buy Pretty Hate Machine first and then maybe The Fragile and The Downward Spiral

I agree totally, and Pretty Hate Machine is an excellent example - I can probably relate to about 90% o fthe tracks on that album

This point I don't agree with at all - for me the best results come from listening to NIN in my bedroom with the lights turned off and the volume at full!
Other than that, driving in your car at very high speeds

I'm just wondering because you've mentioned some decent bands like NIN, Soulwax, Korn, Placebo, Devo etc...

With regards to bands you might like - that's pretty hard as you seem to have posted a wide range of musical tastes.
All I can do is name some of my favourites :-
Clawfinger
Ministry
Smashing Pumpkins
Faith No More
Reef

- this is really a pretty endless list but htese are some that stand out.

Give them a go - who knows - you might like them, then again you might not
Musical taste is a very personal choice

I think so. Emileigh Rohn is Chiasm, she is a solo artist, and a molecular biologist.

Electronic, synths etc.. as you can tell I like, NIN, DEVO, YYYs, and Soulwax aren't afraid of electro either.
Dark, some might say gothic, but I don't think so much, she doesn't sing of roses and sunny mornings though.
Industrial, in a NIN kind of way, focusing on the melodic vocals.

She has a great range of sound.

Here are the samples, the others aren't the biggest indicator, try Isolated. The site didn't work in opera, so I guess doesn't in firefox either, so I had to use IE.

I'll be sure to try them.

Yep, although I kinda put that in to make a statement, its 30seconds like all the other tracks on "Short Music for Short People." a fantastic album featuring most of my favourite bands although of late I've been listening to much darker music.

True. But I live in an apartment (flat) with very thin walls, and I wish to remain on good terms with my neighbors. My car is a 1988 Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser wagon (556 cm long, about two tons, 5 litre V8 engine), so driving at very high speeds simply isn't a possibility.

I also have the distinct pleasure of living in the only metropolitan area of the U.S. that has three public radio stations that play distinctly different formats.

You can live stream here:

http://www.prp.org/

One is AAA format. One is all news/talk. And the third is all classical.
