Punk Rock vs. Rap

Well, why not? Also, why not post your favorite artists in the genre?

1) NWA
2) Dr. Dre
3) Tupac Shakur
4) Ice Cube
5) Eminem

Shit, forgot to post a poll. Someone wanna do that?

lumi 03-11-2005 05:20 PM

For hip hop I like:

Mos Def
Deltron 3030
Quasimoto
Dr. Octagon
RJD2
DJ Krush

I've never really gotten into punk rock. Fugazi has done some nice sounding stuff. As has Dead Kennedies, Dead Milkmen, and the Pogues, but I'm not sure if they're considered punk.

I like some of the collabs they've done.

Both genres are well and truely dead by now; they've become disturbingly corporatised and warped beyond their initial ideals. It's really quite ironic what happened to punk - just compare the anarchistic passion of The Sex Pistols to the watered-down gunk of Sum41 et all.

SamNMax 03-11-2005 07:01 PM

I know what you mean. There are too many rappers out there talking about their money and shit no one cares about.

And about how great they are. Even if they're new. At least I guess they do. Hard to tell what with all of the bleeps.

Bling bling.

Rap was only cool when the rap war was going on. The actual music's just ok but the violence was what made it cool back in the day.

Punk's pretty much dead too but theres some good bands still going.

I've found that with both of these genres have an artist who is truly great, people reassign him or her to a different genre -- i.e. "thats too good to be punk - its rock and roll" --this is just my crazy theory.

Toefur 03-13-2005 01:39 AM

Punk Rock! Punk Rock! Punk Rock! Punk Rock!

I'm not some punk rock elitist, so I can't rattle off a hundred and one obscure punk bands that nobodies ever heard of; but I will say that punk rock is supreme in the face of noise like rap. I can't see myself ever embracing rap.

Eddy 03-13-2005 03:36 AM

punk rock:

1 sex pistols
2 green day
3 oi polloi
4 offspring
5 nofx

rap:

I hate rap

That's a very close-minded comment.

Yes, I will say that too many bland rappers are flooding the market. But there are so many rappers that have made music what it is today. A lot of rappers are just annoying, ala 50 Cent (God knows what Shady/Aftermath was thinking when they signed him) and Chingy, whilst people like NWA and Tupac Shakur spoke to the young black Americans growing up in slums and ghettos across the country. These artists spoke to people and meant a lot. They've delivered much more inspiring and meaningful messages than any punk band ever did (Though, in all fairness, they've both got their own style. Sometimes, I like to put on Ice Cube to apprieciate what the man has done for music. And other times I like to rock out to the Romones).

Even before the East vs. West war, NWA, Ice Cube, and Dr. Dre were pumping out so many incredible songs. Even today, these people are working with other great rappers like Eminem and Lil' Jon and the East Side Boys. And in fact, I consider the "Deathrow vs. Bad Boy" war to be a terrible time for rap. What is so cool about gang wars, killing people because they were on the other side of the country. What's so cool about losing two of the greatest rappers of all time in the process? That's not cool, that's horrible.

Punk. The older the better, though. *makes a shrine for the music of Howard Devoto* :9

Wormsie 03-13-2005 02:53 PM

I am an anarchist-ah!
I am an antichrist-ah!

If I absolutely HAVE to choose, I choose punk. But I'm not a big fan of either genre, except for specific songs.

Intrepid Homoludens 03-13-2005 02:59 PM

Me too. I personally don't care for the very violent content of many rap music. But I loved artists like Diggable Planet and some others. As for punk, same thing. Punk was basically born from the anger over the injustices of class, culture, and politics, and that's what I love about it (sort of similar to the rebelliousness of the Beat Generation in New York and San Francisco in the 50s). I love the music of Patti Smith and early Blondie, not so much The Sex Pistols, New York Dolls, or The Ramones.

Rap and hiphop can get really stupid but I like Spooks, Eminem, Dr Dre, Busta Rhymes, some of Snoop Dog's stuff and Bone Thugs 'n Harmony.

Punkwise... The Dropkick Murphys, Propaghandi, some of Offspring's songs and the Toydolls are kinda funny.

What the hell has Ice Cube done for music? Most of them are pretending anyway.

Oooh, yeah, the Toy Dolls! They're awesome. I was at their concert in Belgrade a couple of months ago. They're super entertaining, and very funny. :P Excellent musicians too. :shifty:

I also like some stuff from Propaghandi.
