I actually saw it in L.A. about a month and a half ago. I was staying with some friends there, and one of them has oodles of Hollywood connections. So we got passes to a special advance screening. Quentin Tarantino was there, among others. But back on topic - Shaun of the Dead rocked my socks off. One of the funnier movies I've ever seen. I'd say it's worth the price of admission for the record collection scene alone. That movie is sheer genius.

Yeah, I've seen it as well too, in San Diego back in July. I'm still seeing again tonight, though, with Jake I think.

Remixor - if you enjoyed Shaun of the Dead, you should try to get hold of the "Spaced" DVDs (series 1+2) as these were the forerunner to Shaun (although not related plot-wise). Shaun is great but Spaced is far superior - the only concern is whether it would translate to a non-British audience. But if Shaun did, I suppose there is no reason why not as it is a very similar feel.

If you want any more info on Spaced, these links might be useful:

SendIt.com (online shop which looks like it ships to the US for only £17.99 + £2.80 S+H)
Channel 4 Shop (this channel produced the shows)
An excellent fansite

Both series are already considered cult viewing in the UK and it always amazes me how few people have actually watched it (I think from memory it was always shown quite late at night ?)

If you do decide to get hold of these DVDs, you will obviously need to be able to play Region 2 as I don't think the US is distributing it at all. And finally, make sure you get the Definitive Collector's Edition DVD as this has LOADS of extras and special features (commentary over every episode by the cast and director etc...)

I have seen a few episodes of Spaced (courtesy of Jake) and I really enjoyed it although I have to say I preferred Shaun. Again Spaced is great, but it's much more hit or miss--sometimes the jokes are dead on but sometimes it seems like it's trying too hard. I would like to see more, though.

EDIT: Also I don't have a region-free DVD player.

When I bought the Dawm of the Dead DVD, I saw the Shaun of the Dead trailer in it...
As soon as the trailer was over, I went over to play.com to order it!
Still hasn't arrived though....
I want my Shaun of the Dead!

It is one of those things where it really improves it if you watch the first episode and follow them logically through - you can watch them standalone, but it definitely doesn't gel as well as you don't get the characters backgrounds quite as clearly as you otherwise would.

One of the other beauties of Spaced is its re-watchability - the sheer amount of pop culture references in both series is phenomenal (be it films, computer games, art etc.) and this is all packed in SO tightly into each half hour that you will always miss a lot even having watched them a number of times - I am still finding little bits that I never noticed before!

I've got to be honest though - I am always in a minority when it comes to anything like this. And there are so few people who feel as passionately about these 2 series as I do (even in the UK). I think we live in an age when there is so much dross on television, more than there has ever been, that to me it was so refreshing to have something this new and innovative. Or maybe I'm just a nutter - who knows ?

If I can get a chance, I'll definitely watch more of it. Like I said, I enjoyed what I saw. As far as the pop culture references go, though, they seemed to go a bit overboard to me. It was almost nonstop. Again, however, I want to see more.

Shaun of the Dead is the funniest movie I've seen in years. Anchorman and Dodgeball were good, but Shaun of the Dead is funnier than both of them combined. I can't believe it only debuted at #8 on the box office charts. Hopefully good word-of-mouth will help it go up.

Shaun opened in hundreds of theaters, unlike most of the top US releases this weekend which were playing in thousands of theaters. So given that, #8 is pretty good.

Amazingly, it opened in the small, four screen theater down the street from me. I will definitely go see it this weekend.

16 days and the DVD isn't here! Play.com is replacing the lost package with a new one, but...
Now I have to wait ANOTHER week!
And it's not in cinemas in my country, and it looks like it never will be...

Damn fine horror movie, although some parts were a bit too long for my tastes (the pub for example) and I desperately needed some subtitles.
