Default Pain of Rejection All Too Real

A study links the feeling of rejection to activity in the anterior cingulate cortex:
Quote:
At first, the students were told they could only observe the game. Their computer-generated playmates, which the subjects believed were controlled by unseen people, then began throwing to them. But after about 40 throws, the other players began ignoring the subject with no explanation. The researchers found that this exclusion caused activity in a region of the brain known as the anterior cingulate cortex, or ACC. In addition, students who reported feeling the most distress from being snubbed showed the greatest activity in this brain region, which is also involved in pain processing.
FWIW, a comment on /. also claims that the ACC has something to do with anal sex...

Yeah, being ignored or rejected really does hurt. Don't need some scientific study to tell you that.

Yeah, but now when people say "Get over it!" you can be all "Hey, man, this is my anterior cingulate cortex here! Give me a break!"

Did they really need to do a test that revealed getting rejected makes you feel bad?

They're probably doing a study now that getting punched causes pain.

I think the point is that rejection shares more with getting punched than previously thought.

That's not a good analogy; it would be more comparable to a study determining WHY getting punched causes pain. I think studies like this are quite interesting and useful. They didn't reveal that "getting rejected makes you feel bad", they uncovered a surprising parallel that I can't imagine would have been otherwise obvious to most people.

Just a little nit picking here, the study only used 13 students which is not enough to draw any real solid conclusions, whatever they did with the data. But interesting non the less.

Good point, Dom. I imagine they just didn't have the munny to rent the MRI for longer.
