From what I've read, it's not that they won't work, it's that SP2 has the Windows firewall turned on by default which is going to wreak havoc with all the morons out there who don't know how to use a computer. With the firewall on, the ports will be blocked, so some things won't work properly. The way they say it, it sounds like all you have to do is just turn off the firewall when they release it, and there will be far fewer problems. (I won't say there won't be any, because it IS Windows... )

guybrush_guy 08-16-2004 08:36 PM

yep, thats what i heard, you can turn it off. but i also heard that if you have home edition it's going to be realy tuff, unless you creat a reg key for it to keep it off. it will turn back on every time you reboot. for profesional there is a simpler mothd to turn it off.

tabacco 08-16-2004 08:54 PM

Did you actually READ the page you (tried) to link to?

http://support.microsoft.com/default...t=windowsxpsp2

The programs that are listed in this article may experience issues after you upgrade to Windows XP SP2. You may not notice some of these issues. Additionally, software vendors may have resolved some of these issues. Contact the software manufacturer or vendor for more specific details.
The reason some of them *may* work differently is because SP2 limits the number of TCP connections any one application can open per second. It doesn't mean they don't work. The page never says they don't work.

If you're going to try to bash Windows or Microsoft, at least do some basic research, okay?

guybrush_guy 08-16-2004 08:56 PM

i think there refering to Knight of the old rebpublic automatic pather or galixys

Kolzig 08-16-2004 11:41 PM

My XP SP2 is working great, at least after I turned off all the crap from the Security Center.

MDMaster 08-17-2004 01:06 AM

I'd recommend using a free firewall program, like Sygate, and sticking to that. At least with Sygate, and with other progs, you can choose which program you want to connect to the internet and which not (like WMP). Avoid using Windows built-in firewall, at least until they make it decent enough to use.

ConcreteRancor 08-17-2004 05:52 AM

There are quite a few Microsoft programs in there. Do you really think they'd release something that made so many of their programs unusable? This is like a list of side effects in a pharmaceutical commercial. Maybe one out of every 100,000 people will experience a problem with some program, but because that one person experiences it, they have to put it in the list.

RLacey 08-17-2004 05:55 AM

Is SP2 actually available? The Microsoft site just tells me to turn on automatic updates...

tabacco 08-17-2004 06:20 AM

SP2 is available. It's being rolled out slowly, I think, to 5,000 people/day. You might try firing up windowsupdate.microsoft.com and see if it's there for you.

Isak 08-17-2004 06:25 AM

I think windows Xp sucks :D

Windows Update changed in appearance a few days ago (maybe before that, I don't check it too often), but ever since then it's said "Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the requested page" whenever I try to check for updates. Good old Microsoft!

Hopefully automatic updates will work without any problems...

Anyway yes, Tabacco speaks sooth. The new security features may well cause a few problems, but you can just turn them off and be back to your old virused-up self within minutes. ;D

...and whats the point of doing that? You are better off with the 1st SP and an anti-virus, firewall, and a pop-up blocker. I guess for some peeps 250 megabytes (yes thats how much SP2 is) is nothing.

You may be thinking of the this-file-contains-everything version of SP2. I'm sure Microsoft were expecting it to be more like 80MB for most people.

tabacco 08-17-2004 04:37 PM

On top of which, many of those files either replace or patch existing files, so don't assume that means your Windows install will grow by the size of the download.

I really hate these mindless linux/mac zealots that have some sort of insane urge to defend their choice of OS the the death instead of admitting that every operating system has ups and downs.

Yes, I was being facetious. The point is that your system would be a lot easier to use if it had no security whatsoever (isn't all that password stuff a pain?), but then you shouldn't be surprised when you end up with every trojan going. The fact is that Microsoft have tightened up security significantly in SP2, but it's silly to assume that this can happen transparently. Any attempt to improve security is going to be met with restrictions on normal use - just try using Windows XP with a 'local user' account - but it's ultimately a lot safer. I bet you had lots of fun clicking 'Permit' and 'Remember this setting' when you first installed Zone Alarm, didn't you? It's the same issue - you're willing to put up with that amount of hassle to gain a little confidence in the system.

Personally I run as Administrator and don't have a software firewall, but I've weighed the risks against the effort involved in using a 'local user' account and running ZoneAlarm and I find them acceptable. I am assuming that a lot of people will do the same with SP2, but they'll still feel obliged to cry when this decision "bites them in the ass" as they say.

:( Dammit, I am far too paranoid now to download this 'Stupid SP2'.

Let me at least ask this. Are the advantages of this thing worth the overprotective firewalls?

I've been running it since RC2, Trep, and it's been business as usual. The anti-Microsoft crowd just like to hype up anything they perceive as annoying.

RainbowLight 08-20-2004 01:10 PM

Grr, yesterday morning SP2 FINALLY came up for me in automatic updates, and my computer crashed a few minutes after I started it, and now it's gone... it's not at Windows Update either... now I have to wait for it all over again...... ARGH
