I got you a shorter and easier to pronounce, forum surname. TickOn second thoughts, maybe I should take that one back and see if they have something else.

Aww thanks guys!
I had a nice, relaxing day with my girlfriend on vacation. It is a bit odd to have your birthday in a different timezone all of a sudden Uncle Trunk: great timing, I was just getting hungry. Step:

Sorry for my late reply, but thanks Up and Intense!
Up: yay for Finnish! When trying to translate it, I get to "Good luck, quite a pig! Take nothing." I guess I am making some mistake here Intense: Evil tentacle monster in my cake, best present ever

Well, it's a Finnish thing First of all, the "eikä maksa mitään" (which you translated as "take nothing" ) means "and it doesn't cost anything" (or "doesn't cost anything" - whichever sounds better to you). There's nothing weird there.
The first part is however a phrase that is/was (it's gone out of style years ago but it's still recognizeable) used to mean 'a lot'. "Sika" means pig and the phrase there literally something like "like a pig / as much as a pig" (well, to be honest it's impossible to translate literally to English (at least by me) as it's a wording that's rather original to Finnish) And that's a Finnish cartoon character, so it's one of those birthday card jokes that are sort of semi-clever and semi-amusing. Wow, quite a post. I'm sure I'm not making any sense. I'm also sure that there's a very long explanation of these types wordings in any complex Finnish guides, it basically looks like a genetive (possesive) form but acts like an adjective. There must be a proper term for it but I never learned any of them (and luckily didn't have to either, I managed to skip them almost altogether and only know the basic stuff like genetives and such). |
