I've consistently heard very good things about Avast, so you might give it a try.

Avira AntiVir Personal

In my opinion it's hands down the best free anti-malware software available. I use it along with ZoneAlarm firewall and can't complain for over two years.

I have not many experiences: I have always used AVG and until now it still works fine for me.

I second this...except for the Zone Alarm...but I just choose not to use that, not because its bad or anything.

I think that one's free for a little while, and then they hit you with a subscription offer where you can't use it anymore unless you pay for it. That was my recent experience with it before I deleted the whole thing.

Ad-Aware is good for a lot of adware/malware issues not always covered by anitvirus programs.

Not true. The free Avast product requires that you re-register it once a year, which is free each time.

For what it's worth, Avast is a great AV package. We deployed the Pro version at Telltale (Pro being the same thing as free with a better skin and commercial licensing options) and I was very happy with it. I run the free version on my parents' machines and on my VMs and Boot Camp partition.

I'm using Avira Antivir Personal for viruses and Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware for problems that Avira can't detect.

I have been using Avast on my Windows partition for over a year and a half now for free. Very clean.

I've been using Avast for 5 years now - never had any virus problems

And as stated before - it's free. You just have to register it (free registration)
for a year. After that - just repeat the process

I've used this site for ages to keep up to date with pretty much every type of software you can get for your computer. All of it's free too!
