Question concerning a 'sound editor'
Hey all,
I've been wanting to lay my paws on such a program that can do the below: I have a certain sound file, of which I don't want the whole thing. For example, say it's 5 minutes, I only want the first and the last minutes. In essence, I'm trying to cut the 5 minute file into a 2 minute file with the stuff that I really want. Let's assume the file is .wav or .mp3 Anyone know of any program that could help me do this? Thanks |

That should be possible even with Windows Sound Recorder... It has a "Delete Before-" and 'Delete After Current Position" option.

Wow! Much thanks for bringing that to my attention!
Now that I have the .wav covered, is there any way I could do this to, say, an mp3 file? Windows sound recorded says that an mp3 file isn't a valid wave file, and I think it's right... I could try an mp3 to wav converter but those have never worked well for me...any one program you could suggest? |

www.goldwave.com - free, fully-featured sound editor. Much, much better than Windows' sound editor.

I thought you had to pay for Goldwave.
Anyway, I've been using Audacity for a while. It's free and open-source and can do what you want and lots more. I'd get the latest 'beta' version though - it's stable enough, and the actual 'stable' version lacks a lot of features compared to the beta version. |

Goldwave is nag-ware, or at least it was last time I used it. So technically it's free

Hey!
Now that we're on the subject, I have a question. I want to record lectures onto MP3's. I think I have to record them from wav format first. Sometimes these lectures can go on for as long as 75 minutes. I need a free wav recorder that can record for that long (Windows sound recorder can only record for 1 minute or so). What is the very best program out there?

I too would recommend Audacity for simple editing. Winamp can export any format to wav. CTRL-P -> Output -> Nullsoft Disk Writer plug-in.

Please take that rainbow image thing out of your sig. I'm not against the existence of rainbows or something, but it prevents viewing the forums properly at any width thinner than that image, and that's annoying

Many thanks to all those who suggested programs. I've hooked up with Audacity and she and I get along well. She's everything I want in a sound editor
