Everyone else's pictures are wonderful too.

Well, there wasn't much special about it. Of course you have to use a pedestal (or tripod or whatever it's officially called ), but other than that I just turned off the flash and used some automatic setting and let it judge the exposure time(?) etc. itself.

And of course it was rather late

Simplest method for you photographers with nothing other than your point and shoot (no tripod):
  • find a stable surface
  • turn off the flash as UPster says
  • put the camera on 'timer' mode
  • place it on the stable surface and compose
  • press the shutter release and step away, wait for it to fire

That sounds easy. I'll try next week when the rain has stopped.

Of course, if outside, the biggest problem is actually finding the stable surface

And don't forget to switch off the image stabilizer when using a tripod.

You can buy these nice bags filled with beads for that. Or make one yourself, filled with rice or small beans. I found out yesterday that it would be nice to have one of those .

That bean bag trick is cunning. I'll have to remember that.

Another camera phone job (I have a proper camera, honest) Tonight's sunset.

Nice one Step! We were just half an hour too late for pics like that. And about the bean bag:

That is soooooo beautiful Step *sigh* the only thing that could make that any better would be you standing with the sunset behind you

Now this one is just totally awesome, especially if you cropped it just a little bit so that the top wouldn't show (and maybe a little bit from the bottom too). But even without that, simply amazing pic

I like this one best:
It's quite hard to get so close to a bird.

I get what you mind how the cropping might improve the overall picture .
Tsa these birds weren't shy at all you could be like 1 meter away and they would look funny at you :p. Glad you guys enjoyed the pictures, was getting some second thoughts.
