Only if theres a reason for it being Black and White. Gratuitous use of Black and White to make the film seem "arty" or "highbrow" I find rediculous. It has to be used properly, with a purpose, I suppose like Schindlers List where the use of black and white both made the film bleak and grim I suppose AND gave the girl in the red coat alot of impact.

Yep. And I even kind of think Schindler's list could have done without B&W...
Oh, and, so that you know, I would indeed watch a black and white movie (Come on, this is an adventure gamers forum! We're talking elite, here! ). I've done so more than often, really.

And I doubt that those 2 were serious (I'm sure at least half of them wasn't).

I think they used some actual footage of the war, so as to make it seamless they made it black and white... then again, I could be confusing it with some other movie.

I don't recall any actual footage of the war, but I saw it a long time ago.
But I don't really see how adding B&W would make it seamless, seing how older images have a very different aspect...

I don't think there was any actual war material on the film, but they did scratch the lenses etc. to make the image more like those old news reels from the war.

I'm doing a course on art cinema right now, so I'm getting a lot of black and white stuff. And it conveys an atmosphere of its own. I don't dislike it. What I like about colourfilms is that black&white is now a *choice*, so now you can use it as a distinct style.

Need I say more?
Tanukitsune, if you've seen all those classic monstermovies, you have GOT too see one of my favourite movies: [i]Das Cabinet Des Dr. Caligari[/B], which is a german silent movie from 1919, featuring the ominous Dr. Caligari (which was a huge inspiration for Tim Burton's "Penguin" from Batman Returns), and also introducing the strange personality of somnambulist CĂ©sare (which was a huge inspiration for Tim Burton's "Edward Scissorhands"). Need I point out that Tim Burton is a big fan of the german horrormovie as well?

Added:
Here's a beautiful picture showing both lead characters of the movie:

Dead Man was already mentioned but two other black and white movies made by Jim Jarmusch were Stranger Than Paradise and Down By Law. All are well worth checking out.

I have nothing against Black and White films, but I must say, I find some of them...um...badly acted. For that matter, I find a proportional amount of today's movies badly acted.

Going My Way is one of the better movies I've ever seen, and it's Black and White.

Then again, the famous Schindler's List.

By the way, I mistakenly voted for "No way" when in reality I meant "Sure."

So mentally count down one vote from the No Way list and add it to the "Sure" list.

Down by law. Brilliant. And I though that Pleasurevill was an excellent way of using bl-white vs. colour to get an emotion across, excellently. As to golden oldies go, Arsenic and old Lace. Maaan, that movie cracks me up big time. Citizen Kane, anybody? How brilliant is that?

Black and white movies are fantastic, the moods appear completely different way and has most certainly it's space in movies still. No doubt about it.
